I think the purpose of using humor in the beginning of Denzel’s speech is to hook the reader to pay attention to his speech. I know this because while he was talking he was stating how the people shouldn’t get distracted while he is speaking; he didn’t say it in a rude way but made it into a joke. Also when Denzel was making a joke the speech didn’t sound boring and everyone focused on him. You can see in the video that most of the audience looked at him and laughed. This shows that when he used his jokes most people wanted to listen to him.
