Why Art?

Art was so fundamental to this movement because it was the only voice that people with aids had. No one would listen to their pleas. Art was the outlet where anyone's voice could be seen and recognized. This was the purpose of the usage of art within the ACT UP movement, to give voices to everyone. Although the artwork used in this movement had a wide range of visual looks, the messages were all the same. The images posted here were used by activists because it was new and fresh. These pieces of art are not like traditional patriarchal paintings and drawings. No one would have dared to display a penis to society in traditional works of art. It caught the eyes of people and spread a message in a powerful way

Similarities and Differences of Other Social Movements

The movement ACT UP was trying to get the government to step in and start organizing medical and social interventions to end the AIDS epidemic. Activists were not only fighting for medical attention, but they were also trying to diminish the homophobic ideologies that arose due to the AIDS crisis. ACT UP followed a path of nonviolence and used the tactic of peaceful protesting. This can also be seen in the social movements that occurred in India, Denmark, and the American Civil Rights movement. Although all these movements were nonviolent, ACT UP used different tactics that were not seen in the other specific movements. Similarities can be seen in all social movements, but the usage of art as seen in the ACT UP movement is what makes it different.
