Kudyapi originated from Palawan - which is found at Visayan Archipelago and the western part of it. The instrument is said to be 50 years old and found during 1940-1950.

✿ The instrument is made from hardened beeswax and measured about 4-6 feet long with nine frets, the unique part about it is that it's the only instrument that is stringed, or in other words, the only stringed instrument among the people of Maguindanao. Given the chordophone classification, it has two strings that each play a role. One for melody, and one for drone which means a sustained pitch. This piece is played by a constant monophonic effect that is produced by playing one string by the drone, and the other, melody, is played using a rattan.

As to why Kudyapi is significant in music - this piece is found in the Museum collection and plays the role of being the representative among the music and instrument making in the Philippines, or rather, in Southeast Asia. It is also a traditional type of music the most folks play.

Description: He is a Filipino composer, musicologist and ethnomusicologist. He is a National Artist of the Philippines for music, and University Professor Emeritus of the composition and theory department the College of Music of the University of the Philippines Diliman.

He graduated in 1965 from the UP College of Music with a Teacher’s Diploma and a Bachelor of Music degree in both Composition and Conducting. An active musicologist, Santos’ interest in traditional music cultures was heretofore realized in 1976 by embarking on fieldwork to collect and document music from folk religious groups in Quezon. He has also done research and fieldwork among the Ibaloi of Northern Luzon. His ethnomusicological orientation has but richly enhanced his compositional outlook. Embedded in the works of this period are the people-specific concepts central to the ethnomusicological discipline, the translation of indigenous musical systems into modern musical discourse, and the marriage of Western and non-Western sound.
