She says in her interview that the systems she wished to study were near impossible to personally access, but nevertheless she persisted. She saw a need and filled it by creating a new mechanism. It is really difficult for women to achieve so much in male dominated scientific research fields, but Kelly has gone above and beyond. 
If we separated Kelly from her natural passion for this subject and just left her innate intelligence and aptitude for the subject, Kelly would not have succeeded as far as she has.
