I have done a fair amount of educational research in my time. I had to do quite a bit for my undergraduate degree (this is when ERIC and I became very good friends!) and then again to write my Master's thesis. I know that databases are a great place to find scholarly articles, as well as educational magazines and journals. We are lucky, too, to live in a day and age when so much information is readily available to us through use of the internet. Often, there is more information available on a topic than one can read. I believe the greater problem in 2016 is not finding the information, but choosing which information to use.

As an administrator for the past 15 years, I have been surrounded by a plethora of data, statistics and research-based programs and practices. There does not seem to be a day that goes by that I do not discuss, question, read or write about data or research findings. It is critical for me, in my current role, to question the data that is presented to me as well as the research-based programs and practices. I must cast a critical eye and ask, questions such as, "What does this data tell us about students and teachers?" or "How can we use these data findings to enhance student learning and growth?" or "What evidence is there that this research-based program is effective?". It is my role and responsibility to help other educators and stakeholders to make sense of the data in order for them to become informed decision-makers.

Over the course of my 25 plus year career in education, I have found research to be extremely important as I have focused on the implementation of research-based practices in my district. Beginning as a science teacher many years ago, I taught the steps in the scientific method, similar to the research process and value the process used to collect and analyze information to increase my understanding of a topic or issue.

Before this week I knew very little about educational research. Now I know the difference between qualitative and quantitative research and I feel that I am more naturally geared toward qualitative research and even am considering doing an ethnography. I feel the stories behind research are important.

Educational research has become more important in our age of accountability. Starting with NCLB, research based programs were required when you implemented programs. Everything seemed to be research based. As an educator, we often have to prove that what we are doing is a research based best practice. We read research in journals to discover new ideas and to prove what we are doing in schools is effective. However, we need to read carefully as we read research. We need to pay attention to sampling sizes, controls and other factors that influence research.
