Toussaint Louverture, a formerly enslaved man, took control of the rebel slaves on Haiti. Toussaint organized a guerrilla war against the island’s colonial population. He made in two other formerly enslaved men, Dessalines and Henri Christophe his generals and in 1795 he made peace with France after it abolished slavery. He became governor-general of the colony and conquered the Spanish portion of island as well to free the slaves there. In January 1802, an invasion ordered by Napoleon landed on Haiti, and after fighting for several months, Toussaint agreed to a cease-fire. In 1803 he was arrested and taken to a dungeon in the French Alps, where he was tortured and died.
Soon after Toussaint’s arrest Dessalines led a new revolt against French rule. With the aid of the British, the rebels scored a major victory against the French there, and on November 9, 1803, colonial authorities surrendered. In 1804, Haiti became the second independent nation in the Americas.

The colonists were convinced that a new era had dawned for Brazil and welcomed Prince John, who made several reforms. He ended Portuguese control on Brazilian trade, opened harbors to the commerce of friendly nations, and got rid of laws that had prohibited Brazilian manufacturing. John left and appointed his son Pedro as regent, when he was asked to return to Portugal Pedro refused and stayed in Brazil as emperor.

During the French revolution there were many disagreements on who could vote, own land, and whether slavery was right. Many slaves escaped from their masters and were known as maroons, these people led the revolt against their masters. This does not mean there was no fighting though, there were still some Portuguese soldiers in Brazil that had to be fought off, fortunately this did not take long.
