A bird eats both plants and animals, including bugs and berries; this makes a bird such as a robin an omnivore. The robin in this chain is considered to be a secondary consumer because the energy is being passed through one organism (the ladybug)
Another example of a secondary consumer is a snake or shrew.

The red tailed hawk is considered to be at the top of the food chain because not many other animals are able to prey upon the huge birds. The red tailed hawk gets the energy that it passed through two organisms making it a tertiary consumer; the hawk is also a carnivore because it eats other animals.
Other examples of tertiary consumers include red foxes, and owls.
