"The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house... Then there was a boom as Tom Buchanan shut the rear windows and the caught wind dies out about the room, and the curtains and the rugs and the two young women ballooned slowly to the floor." page 8

This quote is the first view the reader gets of Daisy. By portraying her in white and flowing with the wind, Fitzgerald characterizes her as a form of innocence and free will. However when Tom closes the window and therefore removes the wind that causes her "flowing" nature, he is symbolically restricting her free will. This is important to the work as a whole because Tom's controlling nature creates unhappiness in their relationship which encourages Daisy towards Gatsby.

"Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling, and asked the nurse right away if it was a boy or a girl. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. 'All right,' I said, 'I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." page 17

Daisy had been living under the control of Tom, and has therefore had to suppress her intelligence and dominant characteristics. She is independent by nature, but her oppressive relationship has had her believe that independence is unattractive and a impediment. She feels that she does not belong in the world, so she wishes for her child to be everything she is not: dependent, ditsy, and one dimensional. Daisy's personal relationship has shifted her entire world view to believe dominance should be met with submissive, but she herself is unable to do this and she is therefore unhappy.
