It supports it by "A belief that the world's nations were engaged in a Darwinian struggle for survival and that countries that failed to compete were doomed to decline also contributed to a new assertiveness on the part of the United States."

4. It supports it because it talks about a book and it says how the author argues that national prosperity and power depended on control of the worlds sea lanes. by saying, "Whoever rules the waves rules the world".

5. It supports it by saying that religious denominations established religious missions in Africa and Asia. It also says, "The idea that the United States had a special mission to uplift 'backward' people around the world also commanded growing support".

1. One reason that American expansion was resisted was that the United States did not care for other cultures and religions being introduced into the U.S. The other reason is because they believed imperial rule would violate America's republican principles

2. Paragraph four uses foreign expansion to justify American expansion. The American trade unions "grew fearful" of the European powers, who, after their expansion into Africa and Asia, was in control of "a fifth of the world's land mass". Since Europeans were in control of so much land, they were in control of lots of markets and goods, which would not bode well for American goods producers. This paragraph supports American expansion on the sole premise that Europeans were in control of too much market, which would cause the US economy to decline.

3. Paragraph five claims that America's economy was becoming "increasingly dependent" on foreign trade and exportation of goods. This paragraph justifies American expansion by saying that, without it, the economy would be doomed to fall because of its competition.

4. Paragraph six asserts that naval expansion was important by quoting Alfred Thayer Mahan: "Whoever rules the waves rules the world". The paragraph then explains how the U.S. changed their boats from wooden powered by sails, to "steel vessels powered by coal or oil". This advancement of technology would help America travel farther with bigger ships, so that they could increase trade with countries across the oceans. The paragraph asserts that it is important to rule the seas, and that America knew this and began establishing control.

5. Paragraph seven explains that an increasing number of Americans thought they had a "special mission" to "uplifit" (force American practices onto) what they deemed to be "backwards" people/countries. "Backwards" people are often non-Christian such as the Chinese that Protestants attempted to convert with "500 [religious] missions".

1-"The imperial rule seemed inconsistent with America's republican principles. The other was that the US was uninterested in acquiring people with different cultures, languages, and religions".
2- it talks about how the US feared that we would run out of raw materials saying "trade unions grew fearful that the country might be closed out". So started to expand out and had territory in Africa and Asia.
3.Due to the belief of the world's nations having to engage in Darwinian struggle for survival, the American economy had to heavily rely on foreign trade. A lot of their resources were sold overseas. "By the 1890's, the American economy was increasingly dependent on foreign trade."
4.They thought that the control of the sea would give the nation prosperity and power. To control the sea they needed naval bases and coaling stations in different places. "Whoever rules the waves rules the world".
5.Paragraph 7 supports American expansion by helping the Protestant church and their mission trips to third world countries. "...including 500 missions in China by 1890."

The first opposition is the idea that the political principles are not parallel to those ideas used in imperial rule. The second was that America did not want a demographically diverse society.

This paragraph states that, "American attitudes toward expansion that was sparked partly by a european scramble for empire" This means that the US did not was to miss out on resources that Europe was gaining.

This paragraph states, "nations were engaged in a Darwinian struggle for survival" This means that the US believed that they were superior and therefore justifies their invasion of countries.

This paragraph states how the American navy began using, "steel vessels powered by coal or oil". Therefore the US needed to invade other countries in order to support their navy so they could protect democracy.

This paragraph states that "the mainstream protestant religious denominations" allowed to US to gain more international support. This allowed them to further justify their imperialism.

1. Imperial rule seemed inconsistent with American's republican principles. Also the US was uninterested in acquiring people from different backgrounds and cultures.
2. European powers began to quickly expand their reach into a lot of Asian and African countries.

"Between 1870 and 1900, the European powers seized 10 million square miles of territory in Africa and Asia." This made American's fearful that they would lose out in the battle for natural resources.
3. There was a strong Darwinian idea that if countries were late to the expansion that they were doomed to fail. "A belief that the world's nations were engaged in a Darwinian struggle for survival and that countries that failed to compete were doomed to decline also contributed to new assertiveness on the part of the United States."
4. "Alfred Thayer Mahan argued that national prosperity and power depended on control of the world's sea-lands." Meaning that a nation's power is dependent on the control they have over the world's ocean.
5. American's felt it was their duty to help the "backward people around the world," and to change their views and ideals.
Chris Kucker, Alisha Quick, Sadie Steele, Emily Speake

Another reason was that the US was uninterested in acquiring people with different cultures, languages, and religion.
2. Paragraph 4 supports American expansion. The quote "trade unions grew fearful that the country might be closed out in the struggle for global markets and raw materials." This quote is saying that the people started to become more fearful because of people competing for the resources.
3. Paragraph 5 also supports American expansion because "the world's nations were engaged in a Darwinian struggle for survival and that countries that failed to compete were doomed to decline also contributed to a new assertiveness on the part of the United States." This means that the economy was becoming more dependent of foreign countries.
4. Paragraph 6 supports the expansion of the US by saying "Whoever rules the waves rules the world." this is saying that if America increase trade in the national scale then it would prevail and rule the trading by sea.
5. Paragraph 7 supports American expansion from the quote" The mainstream protestant religious denominations established religion missions in Africa and Asia:" people justified imperialism with Christianity expansion.
