Artifact #2 Quote from Dr. Cindy Blackstock, a prominent Indigenous scholar and advocate for child welfare, from her work in advancing equity for Indigenous children in Canada

“Reconciliation means not having to say sorry twice.” This quote, often referenced in her speeches and writings, deeply resonates with me because it emphasizes the necessity of meaningful actions rather than superficial gestures in addressing historical and ongoing injustices. Dr. Blackstock’s advocacy highlights how systemic mistreatment and inequities faced by Indigenous people require lasting, proactive solutions rather than empty apologies. As a nursing student, this quote serves as a powerful reminder of my responsibility to not only recognize these injustices but also to actively work toward creating a healthcare environment rooted in equity and cultural safety. It inspires me to approach my future practice with a commitment to reconciliation that ensures tangible, impactful change for Indigenous colleagues and patients alike.

In creating my collage, I drew on the Ways of Knowing—empirical, personal, aesthetic, and ethical—to express my vision for nursing marginalized communities with empathy and equity. This artwork holds deep meaning for me as it reflects my personal identity and commitment to inclusive care. Empirical knowing helped me highlight groups such as Black women, Indigenous elders, and LGBTQ+ individuals, whose documented health disparities resonate with my desire to address systemic inequalities. Personal knowing allowed me to draw from my experiences as a racialized individual, fostering a profound empathy for others facing similar struggles. The pride flag and imagery of reaching hands symbolize my commitment to advocating for dignity and social justice. Ethical knowing provided a moral foundation, reinforcing my responsibility to challenge injustices within healthcare. Relational Inquiry tied it all together, emphasizing how each individual’s unique social and cultural context shapes their health outcomes. This interconnectedness reflects my belief that effective nursing extends beyond addressing medical needs—it involves engaging with structural and social forces that influence well-being. Ultimately, this collage is a deeply personal representation of my journey as a student nurse. It captures my passion for creating equitable healthcare environments and reminds me of my dedication to championing dignity, understanding, and justice for all patients. This piece motivates me to remain vigilant in my advocacy and provides a visual reminder of the values that will guide me throughout my nursing career.

Artifact #2: Excerpt from the book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

“Neil felt that Nao Kao put up a ‘stone wall’ and was sometimes deliberately deceitful. Peggy felt that Foua was ‘either very stupid or a loonybird’ because her answers, even on those occasions when they were accurately translated. Often didn’t make sense. Neither doctor could tell how much of their inability to get through was caused by what they perceived as defects of intelligence or moral character, and how much was caused by cultural barriers.” (Fadiman, 1997)

This excerpt from The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down holds significant meaning as it highlights the severe consequences of cultural misunderstandings in healthcare. The story of Lia Lee, a Hmong child with epilepsy, and her family's struggles with the American healthcare system, illustrates how a lack of cultural sensitivity and communication can lead to tragic outcomes. This particularly poignant moment in the book is where Neil and Peggy misinterpret the behaviors of Nao Kao and Foua highlights how cultural barriers can be misread as personal flaws. Neil feels that Nao Kao is putting up a “stone wall,” while Peggy perceives Foua as “either very stupid or a loonybird” due to communication difficulties. This misunderstanding emphasizes the importance of recognizing cultural differences in healthcare, reminding me to approach patients with empathy, understanding, and cultural humility to avoid similar misjudgments in my practice. This artifact serves as a reminder for me to prioritize cultural humility, deeply listen to patients and their families, and strive for better communication and understanding in my practice.

Artifact #1: Certificate of Completion for Trauma Informed Care Principles

This artifact holds great personal significance as it represents my commitment to understanding and applying trauma-informed care principles in nursing practice. Receiving this certificate is a milestone in my education, marking my dedication to learning about the profound impact trauma has on individuals, particularly in healthcare settings. Trauma-informed care emphasizes understanding the prevalence and effects of trauma and recognizing how these experiences shape a patient's physical, emotional, and psychological health. The certificate reminds me that, as a nurse, it’s crucial to approach every patient with empathy, patience, and awareness of their past experiences, recognizing that trauma can affect how they respond to care. It emphasizes the importance of creating a safe, supportive environment where patients feel respected and heard, fostering trust and improving care outcomes. This is especially important in maternal-child care, where patients may face past trauma related to childbirth, abuse, or systemic discrimination. It also applies to mental health care, where trauma often plays a key role in patients' conditions. The knowledge gained from this certificate allows me to better advocate for patients who may have been silenced or ignored in the past due to their trauma. It drives me to challenge traditional, often paternalistic, healthcare approaches and shift toward one that respects the whole person. As I continue my nursing journey, this artifact reminds me that integrating trauma-informed practices is not only a skill but a moral obligation to provide compassionate, patient-centered care.
