If you’re writing on someone’s Facebook wall, tweeting something, posting a picture on Instagram, or sending your professor an e-mail, make sure you re-read your post before you click “post”, “tweet”, or “send.” By doing this, you will avoid posting or sending something that might offend someone or come off as rude. Re-reading your posts will also allow you to catch any grammatical or spelling errors made. Finally, it will help reduce the chances of people misunderstanding an idea you are trying to convey. Just like you would re-read an essay you are submitting for a grade, re-reading your posts before posting them on social media will prevent any miscommunication.

Social media is growing amongst the younger generation and it is rare to find someone who does not have a social media account that they use to connect with their friends and family. Because social media is so popular, this Netiquette teaches students to be cautious of what they post on social media. It allows them to understand the importance of re-thinking what they are posting so that their posts don’t offend others. Teaching students this Netiquette early, rather than later, will help them use it more frequently and not just on social media.

There is no said right or wrong thing that people can post on social media, but I do believe that there are things that should and shouldn’t be said online. Therefore, I think this Netiquette is important to reinforce. I plan on teaching my students in my classroom the importance of re-reading anything they put on social media just as if they were submitting a homework assignment for grading. Throughout the school year we will be using the internet to do research and do projects. During these activities, I will take the opportunity to teach them the importance of reading over what they put on the internet. By doing that, they will apply it to their personal life.

When creating an e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat, make sure you use a username that does not have any profanity or inappropriate wording. Since this username will be something people will see, it should be appropriate enough that it represents you and doesn’t offend anyone. Having an embarrassing Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat username draws unnecessary attention to the user which can be perceived negatively online. Some things you should avoid when creating a username include: your full name, excessive symbols, and numbers. Instead keep your username simple by using a nickname or something that you won’t forget. Finally, creating a username that is easy to remember and appropriate, will help you look more professional and appropriate.

I think this second Netiquette is important to teach students at an early age because it allows students to understand the importance of creating usernames that are appropriate to share with friends, family, and professionals. Not only this, but it reinforces the idea of students being cautious of how they present themselves to people online. It also teaches students the importance of being safe online. The earlier students realize that, for example, using their real name online is dangerous, the better.

One way that I can do this is by going through different usernames and showing the students why this username is appropriate or not appropriate. That way my students will be able to take what they learned in class and apply it to their personal lives.

Rule #3: Treat others the way you want to be treated.

This saying is viewed as “the golden rule”, according to Caroline Knorr. This is something parents, guardians, and educators alike try to instill in children from a young age, since it puts certain situations into perspective for them; perspective is hard for everyone, but especially for kids. In other words, it can be thought of as putting yourself in another person’s shoes. This is so important to teach to students since this concept is so hard to grasp; we have adopted this saying of treat others the way you want to be treated in order to teach perspective. If what you are about to say to someone would hurt your feelings, then it might not be a good idea to say it to someone else. Along with that, if you are making someone uncomfortable or are bullying them, we teach kids to ask themselves “would I be upset if someone was doing this to me?” If the answer is yes, then we teach them to more mindful of their actions since they now know how others may feel.

Posting anything online has become somewhat dangerous because many do not know how privacy and keeping posts intentional can affect themselves or others. Many social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have incorporated ways to instill privacy within your own personal account. It is important to teach students, as users of these accounts and many other platforms as well, to know what the privacy policies are and how to keep yourself safe from online predators. In addition, understanding the policies can help keep their information from being duplicated or shared. According to Caroline Knorr, pictures, text messages, videos, and much more can be easily downloaded, shared, or edited by other people. Most websites that require you to have an account even disclose that once these things are posted, the website now owns the rights to your content. With the proper privacy settings, you can control who can see your content and in what capacity, which is an important aspect to relay to students.

The same rule and knowledge of perspective applies online. If you can’t say it to someone’s face, then it might not be best practice to say it to them online. Many times, people see their computer/phone screens as the protective barrier between the real world and people. However, people’s negative comments online are just as hurtful as they are if the conversation or comments exchanged were done face to face.

Marla Rosner pushes this concept further by saying that teaching children to be mindful of their words/actions on and off line is a great opportunity to teach them how to confront their issues. For example, if someone is having conflict with a friend, it would be best to talk it out in person calmly and rationally; in other words, if something negative needs to be discussed, it would be better to find a respectful way to approach it in person instead of posting about it online, attacking the person online, or attacking them in person. This rule can be extended to teach general confrontation and conflict management skills.

In terms of other people’s privacy, it is important to teach students about how posting something could affect someone else’s privacy and reputation. Caroline Knorr also states that if you feel a picture, video, or post would cause drama, get them in trouble, or compromise their privacy in any capacity, it is best not to share it online. Just as some people might not want their personal lives or issues discussed publically, they might feel the same about sharing on the internet. Students may want to share their personal lives, or drama with friends, online in order to release their feelings/thoughts on the subject, however it is important to show students that the internet may not be the best platform for expressing everything going on in their lives. We can teach them how to post with intent and privacy in mind, in order to keep the internet safe for everyone.
