It is believed that 99% of women have experienced have experienced sexual harassment. Until now, they have been silent.

I think it really shows the social environment towards the LGBT community in at least this part of the country, while also including a bit of legal things that i will talk about in class! Check it out!

One of the most eye opening parts of the article is that they admit that it took them until 2007 to allow divorce to happen and took until 2017 to allow people to get abortions under specific circumstances.

Poland is a country whose government is run based upon religious Roman Catholic beliefs. The newly elected Law and Justice Party (2015) has been targeting women's rights to abortion and proper sexual education. Many women's organizations have been targeted with raids, defunding of programs, and threatening of jobs. A march in 2017 for women's rights sparked the revolution for change that is still underway in Poland. I hope you enjoy this article and follow the hastag #StrajkKobiet to follow the women's march in Poland.

Hello everyone! My country is Australia and I found this article that included interesting statistics about gender inequality in the workplace and the discrimination that women in Australia face on a daily basis. One of the most surprising and distressing statistics that I saw was that on average Australian women have to work an extra 56 days a year to earn the same pay as men for doing the same work. Another statistic was that even though Australian women make up about 47% of the workforce they take home on average $251.20 less than men each week.

In Brunnen, Switzerland, a pedestrian caught a video of a small group of individuals dressed in white cloaks with white pointed hats and KKK on their chests. The group was carrying torches while walking down the street. According to lawyer and racism expert Daniel Kettiger, “it is unclear if the group has broken any Swiss laws. It would be difficult to establish if the members are guilty of racial discrimination in the current case because they weren’t targeting a specific ethnicity or race.” In addition, it took place during the carnival celebrations where there is a relatively high tolerance for satire. However, if the group had been walking in front of an asylum home where most of the residents were black, the police could have done something.

UPDATE I:
After a wave of deadly terrorist attacks across Europe in 2017, the EU is facing changes to weapon laws. These laws ban certain types of semi-automatic gun capable of firing a large number of bullets in a short span of time. If the Swiss voters back these new rules, there will me new, more restrictive rules on gun ownership. A group called the Swiss Shooting Interest Group launched a popular initiative for Swiss voters to reject the EU's new rules. They voting will take place on March 20th, 2019.
https://www.thelocal.ch/20190513/what-you-need-to-know-about-switzerlands-gun-control-referendum

UPDATE II:
In 2017, the first paternity leave proposal launched. The original asked for time was four weeks partially-paid time for new dads, but then it went down to two weeks. Switzerland had a gender pay gap of 19.6% in 2016. The Swiss government rejected both campaigns last night. So now, fathers in Switzerland will only get one day off when their partner gives birth.

https://qz.com/work/1629025/the-swiss-government-will-not-give-new-fathers-paternity-leave/

UPDATE III:
Rape laws in Switzerland are outdated and dangerous. Swiss law does not define rape on the basis of lack of consent. Instead, it uses a definition based on whether physical violence, threat or coercion is involved. This survey was done as "wake-up call" for the Swiss authorities. There most important finding is one in five women is a victim of sexual violence.

https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2019/05/switzerland-one-in-five-women-is-a-victim-of-sexual-violence/

Last year in Dublin, a strict abortion ban was repealed. The feminist movement is strong in Ireland, but women still don't hold much power in politics, comprising only about a fifth of all government levels. Elections are coming up in May, so the women of Ireland are focusing their attention on rallying women and getting everyone to vote. According to this article, making abortion legal in 2018 and gay marriage legal in 2015 have been huge turning points for Irish women and this voting go around might be another one, as women are determined to stake their claim in office.

Maria Al-Zahrani is an inspiration for those who want to change the world for the better, especially for those who want to promote gender equity in the workplace. As I said in my presentation, the rights of Saudi women are very limited compared to that of men, causing women to flee Saudi Arabia in the hopes that they will live a better life. Al-Zahrani, on the other hand, had the courage and determination to return to Saudi Arabia and work as the head of investor relations in the male-dominated world of finance. I feel bad for Saudi women who feel the need to flee the country. All countries, including Saudi Arabia, should make sure that everyone in the country feels welcomed and that everyone has a place in society. Maria Al-Zahrani is fighting for this cause, and that is why I admire her.

The author has a great voice in her writing and it really gives a new perspective to how other developed countries are approaching this topic with a super open philosophy. They speak a lot about limiting the shame we place on kids growing up on the topic of sexuality, I hope our country could maybe work to adopted some more of these ideas. Give it a read its definitely worth it!

https://www.thecut.com/2018/08/what-sex-education-is-like-in-the-netherlands.html

Under the Communist Party, censorship in China is a frequent facet of life. Although homosexual relations were legalized in 1997 and homosexuality was declassified as a mental illness in 2001, homosexuality remains a taboo in China and same sex marriage is currently illegal.

Because of China's oppression of homosexuality, censorship of same sex interactions are frequent. A prime case study of this is homosexuality in cinema. The suppression of Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury's life as a gay man and his struggle with aids in the recent biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" represents China's current stance with public expressions of homosexuality.

Luckily, four Saudi women, who protested for women to be able to legally drive cars, were recently released from prison. However, all of them are pending trial, and three of these four women were granted only temporary release from prison. Western governments have pressured the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, to release these women, especially since the ban on female motorists was lifted in June 2018. Understand that many of these female activists were arrested just before this ban was lifted, yet they were not released from prison until recent weeks or months in 2019, which makes no sense and is very disappointing. Two other upsetting things have happened in Saudi Arabia. For one, many of these women activists were sexually harassed and tortured in detention and were told to not speak a word about it. Secondly, "authorities arrested at least nine writers and academics, including two US citizens, in an apparent crackdown on supporters of the female activists on trial" (AFP News Agency).

Up until 2018, prisoners in Chile did not have human rights to clean water, mattresses, clothing etc. There were also reports on overcrowding in more than fifty prisons throughout Chile. This is a problem because this dehumanizes criminals and hardens the bias that criminals are not human or deserving of basic human rights. Similarly to the United States, prisoners do not have a direct say in their own well being when it comes to voting. The supreme court in Chile voted in favor that the basic human rights of prisoners needs to be in place. So hopefully from here on out they will have access to basic necessities.

If her family is forced to return, she claims that she will be separated from her children and husband. She claims this because her marriage and family is not recognized by Saudi authorities. Her marriage is not recognized by them because she married a Syrian man, a foreigner, instead of a Saudi man, and her marriage was not arranged.

The Philippines' congress released an online poll this month garnering public opinion about same-sex civil unions. While this may not directly lead to legislation, it does influence the public agenda. However, LGBTQ groups such as the Lesbian and Gay Legislative Advocacy Network deem the poll insufficient expressing the nuances of the issue of same-sex marriage using a poll with three possible answers. In addition, the bill to legalize civil unions, they say, "... creates a distinction between married couples and civil partners' ... ," only further segregating LGBTQ individuals. It may be a while before the Philippines legalizes same-sex marriage, but the poll is a step to guide, but not control, public policy.

There is a new petition gaining popularity in the Netherlands fighting against the acceptance and decriminalization regarding prostitution and the Red Light District. This petition, with 42,000 signatures is making its way to parliament currently by feminist organization as a way to argue that not penalizing buyers is inviting sex trafficking and giving women only a dangerous option to make money. There is debate surrounding how this will effect the workers themselves who argue this is their freedom and choice, but until the model is discussed by parliament this issue will continue to be discussed.

It is also known as the “Law for the Protection of Life and Family," they are trying to convince people that it is to protect families, but in reality, the law is meant to take away women's and the LGBTQ community's right. If the law passes abortion and miscarriages will be criminalized. It would also raise the maximum sentence for abortion from 3 to 10 years and would make it a crime to engage in “the promotion of abortion,” which could mean that the provision of sexual and reproductive information, counseling, or referrals might result in sentences of up to 10 years. The law will prohibit same-sex marriage and legal recognition for same sex couples.

Update: In August, Guatemalan Congress approved a preliminary version of the “Life and Family Protection.” The bill needs to pass another round of votes, as well as an approval per article, before the president can sign it into law.
https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2019/country-chapters/guatemala

-Ismael Sebastian
