One of the issues that digital immigrants in their late 40’s and upwards, although not limited to this age demographic, are encountering is the rise of use in online dating sites. Unfortunately, this older demographic are increasingly being targeted by criminals that are using increasingly sophisticated methods to lure their victims into “love bait” scams.

It is human nature to want to be needed and loved, and these criminals are using people’s need for connections and affections to steal an enormous amount of money. In many cases, people have lost their life savings or investments with little hope for recollection. In one incredibly tragic case, a 67 year old woman Jette Jacobs, was found murdered when she travelled to South Africa to meet a suspected scammer. Ms Jacobs, unfortunately and even more disastrously, declined to listen to her family and stubbornly travelled to South Africa. This case highlights the sometimes delusional perceptions that lonely, and forlorn people have, when they cling to the hope of love even though the warning signs are glaringly obvious. Perhaps being a digital immigrant, and in some circumstances, woefully naïve, can have catastrophic results.
