1. The Life of Caroline Chisholm

On the 30 May 1808, Caroline Jones was born in Northampton, United Kingdom. Her father was a pig-dealer and an upright man who respected peoples and the churches beliefs and values. Many described her mother, also named Caroline, as a kind and cheerful woman. During her childhood Caroline was convinced that God was calling her to dedicate her life to help those in need. This convinced her to convert to Catholicism in 1831.

Caroline married Archibald Chisolm. Two years after their marriage Caroline and her husband moved to Madras, India where their first two sons were born and where she began her first social work. In her time in Madras, Caroline opened her first school for the daughters of European soldiers. In 1838 she moved to Australia and found that boatloads of immigrants were arriving in the colony and had to fend for themselves. Single men fared best, whilst married men with families to be fed were at a strong disadvantage. She felt most pity for all the female immigrants who were starving and unemployed as no concern was shown for their welfare either physical, material or moral. This inspired her work which she would soon become famous for.

Through persistently asking the Governor for a shelter for the women, the Governor allowed her to use a rat infested old barracks in which she could convert and call a ‘Home’. It was here that she could give motherly protection to the girls whilst arranging employment and suitable homes for them to go to. During the years 1841-1844, Caroline’s work assisted 14,000 people. In 1846, Caroline returned back to England where she continued her work for helping others. Caroline soon returned to Australia in 1854, to improve living conditions in the Goldfields. In 1866, Caroline returned back to England where she remained until her death on the 25 March 1877, Highgate, London, United Kingdom.

They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Caroline Chisholm aimed to improve human dignity and implement principles of justice throughout society. Her values, beliefs and attitudes were influenced by her Christian faith and the belief that everyone has a right to have justice and be treated equally. 14 years after Caroline’s death in 1891, Pope Leo XII released his encyclical Rerum Novarum (On Capital and Labour) addressing social justice issues including those issues Caroline had helped with throughout her life. Her devotion to improving the life of others could have influenced one of the most famous encyclicals ever issued.

Caroline Chisholm committed to the living image of Jesus and she dedicated her life to Catholicism and Catholic practices. This displays the priestly side of her work. An example of her prophetic work, is when she was working within the church communicating many principles of social justice which were innovative at the time. As she gained respect in the community, she became the voice of those who needed help (female immigrants). She wrote letters and met up with leaders to get the supplies and equipment she needed to bring social justice. She used her leadership and power to show the kingly work of Jesus Christ.
