He met Montezuma (the king of the Aztecs) and immediately Montezuma believed Cortés was a god because of the Aztecs' beliefs. 
Then, Cortés and many other Spanish colonizers started their colonization process and some of the natives rebelled against them, but sadly died along with Montezuma due to  smallpox.
