The town was called Winchester. His dad owned a 25 acre farm, so naturally that brought about many typical farm aspects with it. Tom grew up working on the farm. He had to milk cows and perform other chores daily. He had to assist with pig slaughterings from time to time. He lived only two miles from the city square area. The population of Winchester in 1950 was under 4,000 people, so obviously he grew up in a much different social scenario than we experience in Frisco. He used to ride his bike to the “city.” He said that it “felt like it was a long ways.”

They all rode horses, and Tom had a pony. In middle school he played football, where he played a variety of positions, and basketball where he played point guard. He also played baseball until he was 15. He enjoyed high school, there were 300 kids in his class. Junior year he was the lead male role in a comedic school play, which he wouldn’t have done if the role had required singing, but it didn’t and he ended up enjoying the experience. He was homeroom president all four years and was voted best personality senior year. He believes the biggest difference between teenagers now compared to when he was younger, is that teens now have some more “independence.”

He’s always been into new technology. He used the laptop very often for work and general necessity. Nowadays, he uses his iPad tablet every day, and constantly FaceTimes with me and the rest of the family. When he was young, he would drive his dad’s Tractor fairly often. He did this as young as 12 years old. His first car was a 68’ Opel. His dad had a 57’ and 62’ chevrolet. He remembers that cellphones came out while he was in the midst of his professional career. He says that was a game changer for businesses across Tennessee.

His older brother had already attended the University of Tennessee. The only schools that my grandfather was legitimately considering were Vanderbilt, and UT. He ended up at UT, after falling in love with the school after he watched their football team play Army at Neyland Stadium. The atmosphere on campus was amazing, and he loved every bit of it. He kept his options open degree and career wise. He took general business classes. He took enough education courses to be a teacher, but never actually pursued that. He graduated with a Marketing Major and a Minor in Transportation.

He started this at age 16, and even did it during summer throughout college. He started off out of college as a field representative for GM. He was then assigned as an overnight transportation supervisor. The company he was working for wanted to get him in the management program, and relocate him to either Dallas or Ohio. He turned this down, since him and his wife already had a baby on the way. He then got a call about working for the Federal Land Bank, back in Winchester. His family moved back in 1976. He then opened up an insurance agency. His wife was a nurse, and Tom retired at a relatively young age.

He grew up in a house of believers. When he was around 8 years old his family moved to Winchester Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a member there from that time, and still is today. It’s the same church my dad was brought up in. He was very involved during his time there. Now, he lives in Florida, be he stays in touch with the people he met at church in Tennessee. He doesn’t go to church as often. He says he still believes. He believes he has been saved.

My parents got an offer on their townhome that they couldn’t turn down, and decided to build a house in Brentwood, Tennessee. While waiting on the house to be built we were with my grandparents for 18 months. Personally, I really enjoyed this time. Tom recalls having lots of fun holidays. Specifically, thanksgiving was an event he really enjoyed. We moved out once the house was built.

He hiked the entire Appalachian trail, in two separate six month intervals. That trail runs all the way from Maine to Georgia. He was an eagle scout. He helped build a small bridge in his city to help get that. He’s driven a tiny convertible all the way to Alaska. He has driven a car and a motorcycle to all 48 continental states. He served on the city council and did lots of other civic duties. He has golfed since college. He’s gotten two hole in ones. His lowest golf handicap was a 2.
