TASK #1) ARGUMENTATIVE PARAGRAPH

In Emerson's "Self Reliance," he critiques society and speaks on its main problems. His view on society as a whole is ultimately negative. In terms of today's society, I think that there are still ideas that are detrimental to the human mind and creativity. I believe that society promotes an unoriginal mindset and the same unrealistic goal for everyone. One particular part of society that I think has a negative influence is social media. Social media paints an unrealistic picture of the "perfect life" and convinces many people to chase a socially appealing goal rather than doing what makes them happy. Social media is bait on a fishhook, and stops people from fulfilling their desires and becoming happy with what they have.

This quote means that a person may not stay around other people if he has different goals or ideas than them. I think a main way I am different from my peers is because I have a different way of approaching my goals. One particular time in my life when I "heard a different drummer" was when I was very young. I had been playing soccer as my main sport for almost 5 years. But eventually I developed a desire to pursue swimming. And that is exactly what I decided to do. I had a calling to a different sport that I had never tried before and committed to it. Now, many years later I have improved a lot and am very happy with where I have come.

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost, has a meaning that is not explicitly stated, but is shown through the metaphors in the text. Frost's message in this poem is that decisions shape our life, in some good ways and some bad. Frost makes a point to emphasize how taking the "less traveled path" can sometimes pay off. I believe that in today's society, a prime example of the less traveled path would be choosing a unique career. Many people decide to pick careers that make them lots of money, but they may not be happy spending their life in this field. Some people decide to take the less popular option of pursuing their dreams, and while they might not be as successful, they might end up happier and more complete after taking the unpopular path. A time I decided to go against the typical path was when I chose to take all honors classes freshman year. I did not know what to expect going in to high school and most of my friends were not taking these classes. However, a year after it has benefited me and set me on the right track academically.

In Walden, Thoreau moves out to a house in the woods where he focus on simple life. He lives on only the things he needs to survive, and follows various transcendental ideas. Thoreau believes that simplicity is so important because he believes that detail takes away the truth and reality of life. I also believe that simplicity is essential to living a happy life. While I do not think it is needed to take it to the extreme that Thoreau did, there are things about simplicity that can improve the life of people as a whole. I can work to simplify my own life by focusing on the things that actually matter to me. For example, I can keep my focus set on swimming and school, instead of complicating my life with things like social media or other things that take up time that don't benefit me.

"The lover of nature is he whole inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood."

I selected this quote because it has a very interesting meaning regarding the connection of youth and nature. This quote means that younger people are more in tune with their senses, and have a better outlook on life. Emerson also observes how youthful people are drawn to nature. His philosophy explains how people who immerse themselves in nature can preserve a youthful spirit and therefore appreciate life for what it is. Emerson associates both nature, and youth with being a staple guide for living a happy and prosperous life.

If I were to leave on a long journey to a distant place, there are a few things I would bring and people I would speak to. As far as material items go, I would bring my phone so that I could speak to my friends and family. I would also bring a speaker so that I could listen to music, which is something I often do to relax and relieve stress. I would say goodbye to my mom, dad, brother, and dog, as well as my closest friends. I would most likely do this face to face so that I could enjoy my last moment with them in person.

This song talks about standing up for your beliefs and following your own path. The lyrics in this song align with the transcendental ideas of self-reliance and nonconformity. I believe that Bob Marley is a good example of a more modern transcendentalist, as some of the things he did and believed in were not always accepted by society, but he followed his own path and seemed to be happy with where it took him.

One piece of modern media that reflects transcendental ideas very well is Wall-E. In this movie, Wall-E is stuck on a destroyed earth while the rest of the population lives in space. Wall-E lives a simple life with little material possessions, while everyone else is occupied by detail and technology. This reflects the transcendental idea of simple living, and it follows the same ideas that many transcendental thinkers have on this lifestyle, considering how despite its simplicity, Wall-E lives a much happier life.
