The person is trapped in CyFy's head making the person not understand what is going on. Just because the brain of the person is trapped inside CyFy's head does not mean he is still alive. Since the person is not in their own body they are technically dead. At one point in the book, CyFy goes into a shop and says, "I'm looking for a nutcracker for my mom" (Shusterman 132). CyFy never knew his mother but the unwind in his brain did. Although he says the thoughts of the unwind the unwind is still not capable of doing anything because he is trapped in someone else's body.

Every single living human has a soul no matter how dark someone thinks a soul can be. The line that defines a living person and a dead person is a soul. When a person's heart and brain are either not working or not in the same body then the soul is not there. An unwind questions the Connor, "if every part of you is alive but inside someone else...are you alive or are you dead" (Shusterman 167). The answer to this question is the person is dead. When a person's soul is taken away their life is stripped from them making them dead inside.

The government argues unwinding does not kill a person and they will live their life throughout another person's body part. When the doctors are taking out Roland's brain they are separating the pieces of his brain making him unconscious. Scientifically doctors say when a person's brain is unconscious that is the point where someone is declared dead.
