Gabriel Koh Cheo Jun (69763)
Billy Tu Jia Feng (69224)
Alvin Ngu Tien Leong (69031)
Mok Wen Hao (70527)

The value of measuring quantity is determined through the deflection of the pointer is known as the deflection type instrument. The measuring quantity deflects the pointer of the moving system of the instrument which is fixed on the calibrated scale. Thus, the magnitude of the measured quantity is known. There are three types of deflection type instrument for electrical instruments which can be classified as Indicating, recording and Integrating Instruments. Three of these instruments has their own distinct characteristics and functions.

First of all, recording instruments are the instruments that record continuous changes of an electrical quantity like current and voltage for a period of time. itRecording instruments are very helpful by showing datas in the form of graphs. Hence, it saves time to measure datas. Voltmeter recorder and galvanometer recorder are examples of recording instruments.

Besides that, Integrating instruments neither provide instantaneous value nor they maintain record of the quantity, but they integrate or total up the quantity under a measurement. The integrating instruments measure the total energy supplied by the circuit in the given time of interval and it is independent at the rate at which the total energy is consumed. The watt hour meter is an example of integrating instruments. This type of meter directly measures the energy in watt hour.

Indicating Instruments indicates the instantaneous value of the quantity under measurement. Their indication is given by the pointers moving over calibrated scales. For indicating instruments in electronic devices, it is giving very fast output which follows the static and dynamic characteristics of the measurement. Ammeters, Voltmeters and wattmeters are the examples of indicating instruments.

Every electrical instrument needs a force on the moving system to indicate or represent the quantity being measured. There are few basic principles for all of these instruments which are, magnetic effect used in ammeters, voltmeters, watt-meters, integrating meters, thermal effect which is used in ammeters and voltmeters and electromagnetic induction effect used in ac ammeters, voltmeters, watt meters and integrating meters. The solutions of many problems involving circuit quantities such as voltage, current and resistance, can be found only by making appropriate measurements. For the purpose of measuring electrical quantities there are many useful instruments, among which the most common are the ammeter, the voltmeter and the ohmmeter.

Jeffery Ting Pik Lung 69955
Koh Qi Zhe 70101
Hu Guo Huan 69865

Indicating instruments are those which indicate the instantaneous value of the variables being measured, at the time at which it is being measured. Their indications are given by pointers moving over calibrated dials or scales, e.g., ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter. This movement of the pointer or the deflection is not constant but depends on the quantity it measures. As the needle deflects and indicates the amount of current, voltage or any quantity, these are called deflection type of instruments.

Recording instruments are those which give a continuous record of variations of the measured variable over a selected period. The moving system of the instrument carries an inked pen which rests tightly on a graph chart. These instruments will go on record on a graph sheet fixed on the instrument all the variations of the quantity in the time it is connected in the circuit. Normally these recordings will be for one day and the recorded sheets are kept as a record of variation of the quantity with time.

Integrating instruments are the instruments which will add up the quantity as the time passes or in other words, will give a total account of quantity spent in a given time for which it is connected in a circuit. For example, an electric meter measure and register, by a set of dials and pointers, either the total quantity of electricity (in ampere-hours) or the total amount of electrical energy (in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours) supplied to a circuit over a period of time and are known as ampere-hour meters, watt-hour meters, energy meters, household water meter etc.

Group member
1.Prashant Ragu(71324)

Indicating instruments: “Indicating instruments are those which indicate the magnitude of an electrical quantity at the time when it is being measured.”
Their indications are given by a pointer moving over calibrated dial.
Example: Ordinary voltmeters, ammeters and wattmeter’s, etc.

Recording instrument is an instrument that display and record the value of electricity that give a continuous record over a selected time. When we turn off the electrical supply, we still get its record by tracing on a paper. I.e.: ECG and X-ray.

Basically they have a sensor, operating and display units. Hence they are also called indicating instruments.
e.g ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter etc.
Recording Instruments
The recording instruments take readings of the physical quantities in the form of the graph. It also records the variation of the quantities concerning the time. The voltmeter, thermoscope, ECG machine, galvanometer recorder are the examples of the recording instrument.
Integrating Instruments
Integrating instruments are electrical measuring instruments, which measures the electrical quantity and sum up with previous value and provides a cumulative result of electrical quantity under measurement. Eg: House hold energy meter The best example for integrating instrument is energy meter. From the date of installing/fixing the meter in a house/electrical installation, it keep on measures the enerctrical energy and provides the cumulative result for the total period.
