Why would Polk declare War on Mexico? Well, Polk wanted to expand the U.S and he knew it was a good thing and he also knew that it was bound to happen anytime soon. That was called Manifest Destiny. In 1845 congress excepted Texas as a slave state. However, Mexico still claimed Texas as its own. That wasn´t all Mexico and Texas couldn´t agree on an official border between them.  Another issue was Slavery. Northern representatives opposed the war, believing it was a ploy to expand slave states in the Union and expand the institution westward. But, there was also The Treaty of Guadeloupe. The treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory,. But some people didn't agree with the war in the first place. I thought this was a war to expand slavery and I hate slavery. I just didn't want slavery to spread, I also didn't want the south to get more political power. Southerners thought that taking a bunch of from Mexico would let slavery expand would make a bunch of new states that would have slaves and, thereby, would give the South more political power.
