I thought for some time about what I know about urban education, equity, and social justice. I know that urban education refers to schools in a city or town. I think that some of these schools have many kids attending them and can even be categorized as being overcrowded. These schools tend to also have a larger number of students from lower income families, and a high percentage of students struggle with standardized tests. My understanding is that money is also tight for teachers and that they have to come up with their own resources for their students. I think that equity in education is that everyone has what they need to be successful. Some students may need more from their school because they have a tougher home life than others. I think that connects to really getting to know your students so that we are aware of what our students may need to be successful and that different students need different things to be successful. In education, I feel like social justice is how wealth and opportunities are distributed in society. Many times, I feel like schools and students are judged unfairly because they may have less opportunities because their families do not have much money. I do not think it is fair. Somehow, those biases have to be removed because if we are trying to be social just, everyone should be given a fair opportunity to go to school and be successful. I may not have a great understanding of these terms as of now, but I do feel like many people are treated unjustly because of where they live and their home life or what their families have.

I don't know much about urban education. I know urban schools are located in cities. I believe the student population in urban schools is mostly diverse with a high enrollment of Latinos and African American students. Urban schools are typically located in low socioeconomic areas where school funding is limited. I feel class sizes are high and overall student achievement is below the norm.
Equity is treating everyone fairly. However, it doesn't mean giving everyone the same thing. It means providing whatever it takes to ensure each person is successful. Equity in education means teachers use various strategies to enable all students to learn. Students today come from many diverse backgrounds including differences in race, culture and income levels. What they bring to the classroom in prior knowledge and experience can be very different. To create equity in the classroom teachers scaffold and differentiate instruction, utilize cooperative learning strategies and allow time for peer discourse.
Social justice is treating people equally, keeping in mind we all have the same human rights. It means not looking at qualities such as race, gender, religion, or income level when providing resources or opportunities. There is much social injustice in education. Schools in upper income areas offer extensive extracurricular activities and over night field trips. Teachers may be provided with "perks" so teacher retention is much more prominent. Even in Title 1 schools funding is dispersed differently.

Based on my prior knowledge, I think urban education is a combination of policy, curriculum and teaching approach specific to school systems in large metropolitan cities that provide resources for the underprivileged student population, their families, and surrounding communities. The student population may consist predominately of a culturally diverse non-caucasian population such as Hispanic, African-American, Asian/Pacific Islanders, and other minorities.

Based on my prior knowledge, I think equity and social justice are concepts of fairness for disenfranchised societies here in America with federal, state and local government providing resources and access to quality education. By providing quality education to all people, we as a society can improve our lives for generations to come. As the American philosopher John Dewey quoted, "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. "
