Murders & lies

Macbeth informs the murderers that it was Banquo, and not him, who turned their lives to misfortune. He gives them proof that this was

done by Banquo when, in the last meeting, he informs them:

“How you were borne in hand, how crossed, the instruments who have wrought with

them…” (Shakespeare 3.1.88-90). This quote suggests that Macbeth is deceiving the murderers into believing that

they, in turn, have been tricked, manipulated, and deceived by Banquo.

The Porter: comic relief or dark foreshadowing?

The porter in act 2 appears as a moment of comic relief, as his crude sexual jokes allude to. In reality, he has a much more serious function: he pretends to let people into hell he mentions a farmer who hung himself on expectations of plenty. This foreshadows Lady Macbeth’s suicide in act 5 as a result of the guilt of being an undeserving queen.
