The aim of schools in a democratic society is to reinvent thinking and include all groups, regardless of where they come from. Public education is supposed to be successful at promoting diversity. Ultimately, the officials and school board decide, however students choose their friendships. It's important to see how our world can be shaped through officials silencing certain areas and promoting others.

Schools are supposed to be an institution for children and teenagers to learn skills they will need to be functioning members of society and the workforce. Unfortunately, most schools in America rely on outdated teaching methods that have been proven time and time again to be ineffective. Additionally, much of the curriculum is biased or meant to sway students opinions one way or another. There is a severe and gross lack of regulations and a huge focus on all the wrong things. In a society where throwing a ball can get you a full ride scholarship at a prestigious university, the idea that schools are meant to help students learn is becoming more and more of a joke. The testing system is also a joke as it only really tests for one type of learning style and does not and will probably never actually help a student learn. Memorizing answers and spitting them onto a piece of paper is not learning, even if you get 100 on a test. Schools are NOT a democracy and it is NOT preparing students for the “real world” and democracy in action. Schools are formatted so teachers have all the power in the classroom and are just free to do whatever they want with that power. Sure, some teachers decide that their classrooms are student-centered, but the majority of teachers will just completely take that power and disregard student feedback.

I like the way he discusses how he is worried about mental health and bullying and that those issues can be tied to lack of inclusion and equity. I also agree that the point of schools should be to teach civic responsibility along with academics.

Schools have many purposes such as providing students with the opportunity to learn in a fair, safe, and diverse community. By including democratic education, it allows for students to have choices in what they are learning which in turn will engage them more in school. Student engagement is critical to student success. Schools are responsible for teaching life skills, socialization, academics, and civic duty. All these things are important in creating a society in which everyone feels included and valued. Schools must set the stage for these things to take place.

In that way, they can be effective members of a larger democratic world, where their unique perspectives and ideas can and should be shared. Schools should provide the tools that students need in order to succeed, without spelling out particularly what is the "right" thing to say and think, within the limits that things that are more blatantly hurtful and obviously incorrect or simplified for the sake of creating false narratives should not be tolerated.

The issue lies in the fact that people want as much control over their kids as possible, and to a larger extent governments may sometimes want to control the thoughts and ideas that these students have access to. Things such as book banning or defunding of education contribute not only to lower quality of education, but can be further used to push narratives with little contest because the knowledge of said information is regulated by someone else (typically people that want to remain in power or to push their own ideals onto others).

From another perspective, parents often think they know what is best to teach their kids, and so there is a mistrust that is developed between parents and schools. In a democratic system, this is allowed, but when uncontested it can lead to the spread of biased information from the parents onto their kids.

I worry about school testing. I feel the school system is driven on doing well on exams and not true knowledge. I feel the school system has not taken different types of smarts into consideration. Some children are book smart, some children have a talent, others a creativity, and some are more of speakers. I think it’s time the education system evolves and leads more into the true potential of students and not just testing scores.

This can mean more hands-on activities for students, and more involvement in current issues. When I was in school there was no such thing as zoom or ipads until I was in middle school. Now every school has a 3D printer. Studies even show students are more engaged when using ipads and laptops than pen and paper; this prepares students for work life and college readiness.

I think students' safety is in question. In 2023, there were 346 incidents according to the U.S. News. School safety needs to be re-evaluated. So my question is how can we protect these children and stop gun violence in schools across the country? It is not right for children to fear going to school. School should be a sanctuary for learning; not a place where fear is put into place. I’d like to understand why more seasoned educators are not part of the curriculum decisions. While I understand the need for teacher accountability, guidelines have become so strict that teachers are stifled in creativity and making them seem robotic and inhuman. What kind of social skill does that teach to children? Afterall, they learn by example.

I feel that if too much advanced technology is implemented, it will take away from the way students learn. Students can get used to using the internet as an easy way out of things and they're not truly using their brains and gaining new knowledge for themselves.

The public schooling is supposed to be successful at being inclusive and promoting diversity, which also building a community that connection each student to one another. The people who get to decide this is typically the school board but also the teachers get a choice in how they approach it. Its important because students' personalities are heavily influenced they the people around them and especially people who are seen as role models.

Schools always try to provide an inclusive learning environment that can promote diversity and prepare students for personal growth and more opportunities in the world. Public schooling aids children in unique learning experiences, involvement, and encouragement to excel and become successful but also to have fun, freedom, and the time for personal development which allows students to grow relationships, friends, communities, and growth among themselves.

I worry that, as with many American ideals, our talk overshadows our action. For example, No Child Left Behind sounded like a wonderful idea (just based on the name), but in actuality, it damaged nearly every aspect of schooling by prioritizing standardized testing and tying performance to financial benefits. While it was recognized to be a bad law that failed to address the issues it intended to, it demonstrates just how difficult it is to properly attend to all the complexities of mandatory public education. It doesn't help that increased political polarization has decreased trust in schools, teachers, and people who have actually put in the effort into theorizing, testing, and determining what changes need to be made to our systems for students to actually succeed. The excessive bureaucracy intertwined with our education system and growing cultural unrest leaves me wary whenever someone innocently claims to care about the problems plaguing our schooling.

Going to school not only helps us learn academically, but we learn socially. We learn to make new friends, learn and interact with others. We also learn how to participate and collaborate whether it may be in the classroom or outside of the school like on teams or clubs. I really hope that in terms of safety, that we will stop having school shootings and we should stop normalizing violence because we all deserve the right to feel safe going to school and feeling ready and excited to learn everyday. It is very important we make sure we create a safe and healthy environment for not only for the kids, but also including to the teachers. It is so scary to think that as I've grown up over the years, the rate of violence and school shootings have increased dramatically which can also affect our ability to cope with our emotional and mental health and how we process things within ourselves.

In a democracy, schools serve as vital institutions for fostering civic engagement, promoting social equality, and cultivating informed and responsible citizens. Beyond imparting academic knowledge, schools play a crucial role in instilling democratic values such as respect for diversity, critical thinking, and active participation in the democratic process. They provide a platform for students to develop the skills necessary for constructive dialogue, collaboration, and problem-solving, preparing them to contribute positively to society. Additionally, schools serve as spaces for nurturing empathy, tolerance, and respect for the rights of others, laying the foundation for a more just and equitable democratic society. Ultimately, in a democracy, schools are not merely centers of learning but also engines of democratic renewal, where the next generation is empowered to uphold democratic principles and enact positive change.

Public schooling is intended to be successful at fostering democratic values and preparing students to actively participate in democratic society. In essence, it aims to cultivate informed and engaged citizens who possess the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and civic virtues necessary to contribute to the functioning of a democratic system. This includes teaching students about the principles and institutions of democracy, promoting respect for diverse perspectives, and instilling a sense of civic responsibility and ethical conduct. Moreover, public schooling endeavors to create inclusive learning environments that empower all students, regardless of background or identity, to participate fully in society and exercise their rights as citizens. Through its emphasis on democratic education, public schooling aspires to equip individuals with the tools and understanding needed to uphold democratic ideals, navigate complex societal issues, and actively shape the future of their communities and nation.

In my opinion, the main point of schools besides educating the students about different topics and subjects is to prepare them for the real world. I believe that every individual who attends a school should be able to gain some understanding of the real world, how to navigate their lives as mature adults after graduating, and be able to gain fundamental values such as; loyalty, responsibility compassion, respect, and creativity. In addition to this, another point of schools should be to create a diverse body of students and to encourage them to be open-minded and willing to learn from one another, no matter how different their ideologies and beliefs might be from one another. By being willing to learn from one another students will learn how to have healthy conversations, socialize, and communicate effectively, which are some of the most essential skills for every student no matter what field they choose to work in the future.

One of the worries I have at this moment when it comes to schools and education is how dependent students are becoming on ChatGPT and using it to complete their writing assignments. In my opinion, because of how much some students are becoming dependent on ChatGPT to do their assignments for them, it will remove the values of authenticity and writing skills from them. As we know writing is one of the most essential skills that a person can have no matter what field they are in or what subject they are studying, so I believe that by relying on ChatGPT all the time, students will lose their creativity and skills in writing. Also, because of how fast ChatGPT completes the writing or any type of different assignment, and how convenient it is, this will lead students to give up on working hard and staying committed to completing their school assignments on their own.

Schools in a democratic society aim to create an all inclusive environment in which students can strive and learn how to make educated decisions with the knowledge they are supplied. This knowledge overall helps make these students educated citizens in todays society and helps shape our society as a whole. Public schools should supply with students with the basics of what one must know in order to go on with their day-to-day activities. They should be teaching the basics of math, english, science, reading, etc. In the end, what defines an effective educational system and well-educated people are determined by society, educators, legislators, and communities working together. This is important because those who have the ability to teach students are the ones who are single-handedly shaping the future of our society by brining up the next generation.

Worries that I have about the current schooling system is that technological advancements are taking over. Before all these advancements, students and teachers were able to create genuine connections and feel safe and loved in the classroom. Now, there is less engagement in the classroom. This causes for a disconnection between the teachers and students, and makes students feel ignored. This can cause for an increase in mental health issues.

Respect is one of the core fundamental values that every individual must have. I think schools are one of the necessary environments that should be in charge of teaching their students about respecting others but also respecting themselves. In some cases, sometimes students might get caught up so much in the idea of being assertive and trying to prove their point that they forget to maintain their respect for other individuals also. I think respect is an important value that will help to maintain a safe learning environment where students will not be afraid and discouraged to share their voice and promote having more healthy conversations.

The aim is to provide equal opportunities and allow every person to voice their values and opinions. It's important for schools to have inclusion and educate those to become a good member of our community. Public education is supposed to be successful at giving everyone equitable opportunities regardless of their background or circumstances. They are supposed to prepare children for the future and help reach them their full potential. The faculty gets to decide what they are learning and shape children into who they will become. It's important what children learn because it could influence their beliefs and opinions.

The aim for schools in a democracy is to offer all children no matter their background, wealth, status in society or other ideas an equal opportunity to access a positive educational experience to give them the opportunities to be able to choose and have options of what they decide to do with their lives. A democracy allows anyone to become anything. This includes at the very start an education that will give the knowledge of not just school work, but life lessons and ideals that they will choose to utilize when they choose a career or lifetime acitivty for themselves.
