Religious School - Lesbian Moms

I grew up with two moms who raised my sister and I to be, I think, pretty great young women. However, we went to a religious school growing up that was extremely homophobic, and in which we had to hide our family life in fear of being kicked out. I was told "Gays can't raise kids" and "If you try to convince someone being is gay is wrong and they won't stop, cut them out of your life." This trauma still affects the way I see religion, family, and power.

I was born and raised in Hawai'i, on the island of Kaua'i. As an indigenous Hawaiian person, there was never a time in my life when my identity wasn't colonized. However, I spent so much of my childhood in white spaces with people who "don't see color", that I started to not see my own self. It has only been in the last decade or so, entering into educational spheres and having to do my own work in order to support students, that I have been able to begin to reckon with my own identity and how it has been complicated and suppressed by colonialism and a Euro-centric school system. There's is no way to decolonize American schools because they've never not been colonized. We must begin anew.

I was sexually abused as a child. There are many ways that I still experience/encounter this trauma. The way that I am most disturbed these days are in my projections onto my son. I am deeply afraid that he will hurt others and hate that these thoughts intrude into my relationship with my sweet baby (he is 8!).

Made a subconscious decision about hiring a babysitter based on race. I felt my young daughter would not be able to connect as well with a women who didn’t look or sound like me. Reflecting on my decision to hire a Caucasian women over an African American women (who were both equally qualified) makes me sick to my stomach now to think about it. And… how that young women might have experiences racism (whether she knew it or not!) because of the color of her skin. I’m ashamed. But so thankful we are now in a place of recognizing these biases, even if they don’t come from a place of hate.
