I think the character itself changed a lot over time.In the first comics, he seemed much more a power figure from a grand, powerful nation in Africa.
In the second edition by Christopher Priest, he is built more powerfully, and is portrayed as more brutal and commanding, with tech (and a love interest, as seen in the last slide of that section it seems) by his side.
In the version created by Ta-Nehisi Coates, T'Challa is portrayed much more as a king; leader of his people before savior to the world. He cares far more for peace and the well-being of "his children" than being seen as a hero in his nation.
I think with these changes to their king, the land of Wakanda seems like a far different place; first more unknown but rich, then brutal and possibly terrifying, then a nation with power but a strong leader.

In the older comics, Wakanda is depicted as more of a backdrop for T'Challa's leadership but with the introduction of vibranium, the representation of Wakanda changed to symbolize how the resource and the technological advances affected the country. This can be seen by Wakanda being shown in greater detail in the later comics, even if the setting itself is still in the background.
