Children taking part in the assessment, self assessing. Run a programme and identify issues. Its a natural form of assessment. The children do it without prompting. Conclusion to the lesson - present work to the class.  Using oral language skills and getting feedback from peers.

  • What strand of English or Gaeilge are you addressing? I would use Scratch in this English lesson to explore oral language skills - developing cognitive abilities through language. I would like the children to use Scratch in this lesson to make predictions on their class novel at the end of a chapter or section of the novel e.g. Toro! Toro! by Michael Morpurgo. I think Scratch offers such a wide variety of animations/sprites/backdrops and opportunity to create such unique animmations that it would offer the children the chance to be very creative with their predictions.
  • What Scratch activity forms part of the lesson? The children would be asked to plan their predictions firstly during a whole class discussion. I would ask them to think about the places they imagine Paco the bull escaping to and what implications this would have on the main character Antonito. We would look at questions like where? how? why? and discuss the possible outcomes. When using Scratch I would encourage the children to look at the backdrops available to them and to also take sprite costumes into account if describing what may happen the characters. They may wish to have their sprite speaking in the animation to describe what they are doing and what might happen next. I like the idea of the children possibly even using Scratch to create a character description or quiz based on the class novel also. 
  • What classroom management strategies will you employ? I think I would use small groups or stations as shown in the video during this module. When working on a class novel, I liked the idea of different groups using different methods to demonstrate understanding and to also have the opportunity to present work in a variety of ways. Perhaps having some written stations, some other forms of ICT such as Popwerpoint/Prezi as well as a Scratch group or groups would be very beneficial and keep the children motivated and engaged in the task.
  • What is the classroom layout and what resources are needed? Resources needed would be computers with Scratch, Powerpoint, IWB for presentation afterwards, class novels.
  • How will you assess the activity? Assessment would be during the activity when helping the children around the classroom and also I would ask the children to present their work on the IWB afterwards, allowing for peer assessment also.

    I have to say I found the Backpack tool to be of great help during this module. I have a boy in mind in school at the moment that i have been using Scratch with at a very basic level and I know he often searches other projects online and marvels at the complexity of much more advanced code that he (before now) though was out of his reach! I cant wait to get back to school and show him this tool. It will be very beneficial, especially when using across class levels for the younger children to be able to manipulate more advanced code and to create something they can use again themselves. 

    POST THREE in response to using Scratch to support learning (novels)
    I certainly think these kind of projects are of great use for teachers and students alike. They would definitely enhance learning as they appeal to all learning types. The visual learner is catered for and I think it would be very beneficial for allowing the children to comprehend the novel. In the projects you shared the children can clearly see the setting, the type of bonb shelters, the noises the children would have heard and through the use of script, the children themselves offer a description of their lives. I think this makes the book more accessible for children and allows them to use the comprehension strategy of visualisation when continuing their reading of the text. Also allowing children themselves to create projects like this means they themselves demonstrate their level of comprehension, allowing the teacher to assess learning and to plan for future lessons.
