Period 4 - 23-24 Simile/Metaphor Show & Tell by Brittany Branning

Your job is to post an example of a simile/metaphor in one sentence. Tell which type of figurative language your sentence demonstrates. Explain what the simile/metaphor means. Be inspired by our class lesson's array of pop songs and their similes and metaphors. You can use a simile/metaphor from a song for this assignment. Use your independent reading book as a a resource; have you found any similes/metaphors in your reading so far this past week? Look up a famous simile/metaphor from a classic novel. Your simile/metaphor must come from a resource and not just be a sentence you make up on your own. DO NOT USE an example from the dictionary. This is a find an example search, not just look up the example assignment.

Give your simile/metaphor in a quote. After the quote, tell me where it came from (song, book, website, etc.).

“In the eastern sky there was a yellow patch like a rug laid for the feet of the coming sun . . .” — The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane

Then, explain. Tell which type of figurative language it is. Describe the comparison being made and what it shows.

This is a simile. It compares a yellow patch of light in the sky to a rug set out to offer a walkway for the sun. The simile paints a picture so that the reader can imagine how the path of the sun's light will follow almost like a carpet that is rolled out for one to walk on. I think of a welcome mat outside one's door or a red carpet rolled out for an awards show. The simile sets a mood that is warm, welcoming and inviting.

"When the chips are down, these . . . these civilized people, they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve."

         - The Joker; The Dark Knight

This is a metaphor. It uses the phrase "When the chips are down" as a way to say "When things get hard and are going poorly" as the phrase means you are doing poorly in the game poker. When he says "they'll eat each other" he's talking about how the morals that people claim to have don't mean anything, and that they'll stab each other in the back and betray the things they said they believed for their own personal gain if the situation isn't convenient. He's saying that people are willing to take from others despite whatever they have said in the past. The quote compares doing badly in poker to people doing badly in life. This quote illustrates that in the end, when things aren't going their way, people are selfish, greedy, and cruel.

My simile is

"You're fighting me off like a firefighter
So tell me why you still get burned" in Hurts so Good by Astrid S.

This simile compares the person the artists is talking about as a firefighter and Astrid as the fire. This demonstrates that the person is fighting her off like they are rejecting her love. However, like a fire, they still get burned which means that even though they don't want her love it still hurts them inside. This simile is important because it illustrates how both sides in the relationship is hurt which sets the mood in the song that both sides are dealing with the pain of the break up of the relationship.

In the core of some planets, it is thought that there are many precious stones, including diamonds, so, she may be communicating that once you get past the hard layers, something beautiful waits inside, representing the light and beauty inside people.

The comparison is the characteristic of tranquility and a forest. For someone to be tranquil, they’re calm and steady. A forest is typically categorized as a tranquil area, so by comparing the necessary characteristic for the soldiers to a forest, it highlights just how calm and ready they need to be for war. When I think of this, I can imagine the desperate need to be ready for war in the movie.

"Shine Bright like a diamond". It came from the songwriter named Rihanna who created a song called Diamonds. This lyric is a metaphor because it uses like and compares the person hearing the song to diamonds. Shine bright like a Diamond uses figurative language to show that everyone is worth the same amount as a diamond. It also means to be beautiful and also don't blend in and be different. Many parts of the song have similar meanings like "You and I we're like diamonds in the sky". Rihanna has made many songs with figurative language like this song.
