The definition of a 'Thematic Map' is a map that is based and referred to a particular theme. For example, a thematic map could be based on topics such as population density, culture, agriculture, time zones, a census, or weather. Additionally, one common feature of a thematic map would be the colour incorporation. Specifically on these maps, the use of a variety of bright colours, particularly of the same shade, is to identify and draw attention to different aspects of the map.

Thematic maps are maps that have a specific theme. They can inform you of practically anything but only inform you of one thing on that map. If the map's theme is pollution, that means the map will be only about pollution. There will usually be a key at the bottom with different colours meaning different things. E.g. Blue= 1,700-2,000 kg of pollution Orange= 200,000-260,00 kg of pollution. The colours from the key will also be on the map.

This map of Australia shows what the temperature will be on Friday afternoon. There is a key on the left bottom corner with colours that are on the map showing what colour is what temperature. This map only shows information about the temperature(it's theme), that's why it is a thematic map.

Thematic maps are maps that give you information on a specific topic. There cannot be a map giving information on 2 topics. All thematic maps will have a key and colour to show you for eg the most densely populated area in a state or country. Most thematic maps work like eg blue = hardly any people and red= densely populated areas. Other thematic maps can be used to look at weather patterns and cyclones by displaying the movement on a map to see where it's heading.
This map of Australia shows the amount of rainfall from 1900 to 2005, the pink shows dense amounts of rainfall and the yellow shows that the state/country has close to none rainfall usually.

The key is very important on a thematic map because it will show you what the colours represent and what topic the map is about e.g. rainfall, animal population.

This map is of the USA and is showing the different temperatures around the country, using a diversity of different colours. Each colour represents a different temperature on the continent.
