Re-Design Classroom Space

As many educators, I attempt to involve my students in arranging their space in the classroom. Every year I change things around to better accommodate my learners and their needs. However, due to the mounted projector and the interactive board, the positioning of the desks is somewhat limited, since the board tends to be a focal point. As a solution, one year I grouped the desks by four and spread out as much as I could to make it easier for students to move around. Another idea is to allow artistic students to utilize their creative powers and design much needed posters. Students really take pride in their work and love seeing it being on display.

Ask Students What They Want To Learn

At the beginning of each year, I ask my students to either complete a questionnaire or share their ideas of what they want to learn in my class. Based on their interests and requests, I design curriculum for that semester. I explain to the students that there are basic concepts and vocabulary that are absolutely essential and will be taught no matter what, however, I give them a lot of freedom on what topics they wish me to cover.

Collaboration

I think a problem for the district/county is not having adequate time for collaboration. I am not denying that there isn't any time for working with others, but just not enough. I think a really simple solution is to allow teachers to collaborate with other team members (not just at their school or maybe not just within the county) as well as the specialists. Going from Gen. Ed teacher to a Specialist teacher has shown me that there is a huge gap between the two. I think its important that the specialist teachers have time to meet with the Gen. Ed teachers and work together, co-plan, co-create, co-design those project based learning projects. I think a facilitator is needed to ensure a problem is being solved and stay focused, but allowing amazing minds right here in our county to work together in essential.

I have implemented new designs in the classroom to make it more comfortable for students, but I think including them in the process is a great idea. Ensure that all of the things we spend so much time working on to make special for them is effective for them too.
