Motion pictures became a big part of the entertainment industry. The technology to make motion pictures had been around for a generation, but the movie industry became popular in the 1920s. During the 1920s, 60-100 million people went to the movies each week. Silent pictures were an ideal entertainment at a time when millions of immigrants spoke little English. Movies were available to anyone with a few cents to spare. Silent movies made it easier to cut across geographic boundaries.

Charlie Chaplin was the most famous silent film actor. Chaplin played in Little Tramp, Modern Times, and City Lights. In 1927, he film industry changed with the release of The Jazz Singer, the first movie with sound. No matter silent or sound, movies spoke directly to millions of people in America.
