MTSS allows for differentiation (student choice) which in turn improves SEL outcomes for students, which in turn improves Equity for students (specifically around culture for learning). These 3 areas are intertwined and lead to improved learning outcomes for our students, especially in light of the educational and personal traumas many of them have experienced due to the pandemic.

Together, MTSS, SEL and Equity combined can and will improve the rate of learning for students. With goal setting you allow the students ownership and responsibility of their learning. With Differentiation you allow all students to flourish at their own skill levels. With thoughtful feedback students are able to understand their own learning better and where they are in reference to their goal. Combined, these skills allow students to achieve mastery in your class and have the resources to do so afterwards.

Reaching success with challenging but attainable individual goals helps students feel better about themselves and they are more likely to have the confidence to thrive in other scenarios.

MTSS allows teachers to introduce learning targets and for students to set learning goals. Through formative assessment data we can differentiate instruction and begin to identify students in need of different levels of interventions. When we do these things in addition to creating a positive school culture and climate and teaching social emotional skills we provide equity and high quality educational experiences for all our students.
