After Holden describes punching windows during the aftermath of Allie's death, and not being able to make a complete fist anymore, he states, "I mean--outside of that I don't care much. I mean I'm not going to be a goddam surgeon or a violinist or anything anyway"(44). The fact that Holden is unable to make a full fist symbolizes that he will never be able to function the same, physically or mentally. By saying he's not going to be "anything anyway", shows that he lost any sort of aspiration or motivation after Allie's death. He doesn't look towards the future with excitement, or harbor any feelings of purpose. When Holden says "I don't care much"

When Holden reminisces about his brother's death he says Allie was "fifty times as intelligent. He was terrifically intelligent...what a pleasure it was having a boy like Allie in their class" (43). By repeating himself Holden tries to persuade the listener that Allie was smart and he wasn't just an average person in this time period. Furthermore, Holden says "a pleasure" of having someone like "Allie" in a classroom signifying he made a difference that was noticed. Also, by differhentiais intelligence with Allie's, Holden tries to resemble that Allie was a role model to him.

Because Holden doesn't accept his own grief, he plays off Allie's death as unimportant. When Holden describes breaking all the windows the night Allie died, he admits his actions were stupid and dismisses it: "...I can't make a real fist any more -- not a tight one, I mean -- but outside of that I don't care much" (44). By not being able to not make a tight fist, Holden displays how he loses a piece of himself because of Allie's death. When saying that he "doesn't care much" Holden plays off Allie's death in an attempt to escape accepting his own grief.

When Holden discusses the physical state of his hand after he broke it from punching a window out of anger from Allie's death, he states, "I can't make a real fist anymore--not a tight one, I mean--but outside of that I don't care much" (44). Holden says that he
"[doesn't] care much" about his injured hand, which implies that the pain of his hand is nothing compared to the pain of losing Allie. Additionally, when he notes that he "can't make a real fist anymore," Holden conveys that making a fist is a reminder of Allie's death. He refuses to make this connection to his brother, which serves as his standard for also refusing to make connections with other people.

When Holden brother Allie died, he "broke all the goddam windows with [his] fist, just for the hell of it... it was a stupid thing do do, I'll admit, but I hardly didn't even know I was doing it" (44). Holden attempts to play off his burning pain of lossing his brother to cancer by saying his actions were "just for the hell of it." He even admits his actions were stupid, but he doesn't do anything to change it, because the reader "didn't know Allie" (44) like he did. Holden demonstrates the disappointment of knowing someone who died.

When Holden was describing Allie's mitt, he explains the reasoning for the poems on his mitt "so that [Allie would] have something to read when he was in the field and nobody was up at bat." Allie uses his decorated mitt when "nobody" is around him, to comfort him and entertain him. Allie's mitt is a parallel to Holden's hat in that each item is their physical consolation to isolation. Even though Holden seems to gravitate towards isolation he truly prefers company.

When recalling the memory of breaking a window because of his brother's death, Holden explains that "[his] hand still hurts [him] once in a while when it rains and all, and [he] can't make a real fist anymore-- not a tight one." His inability to "make a fist" properly represents his pacifism influenced by his brother. In addition, the fact that he doesn't care much about the side effects other than his weak fists, validates the fact that he does care and is affected by

Holden goes into a description of his brother, Allie, about who he was and how he died. At the end of chapter 5, Holden says, "I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage" (44). Holden acted out of the norms; therefore, he was labelled as a monster, a "psychoanalyzed" person. Showing that people during this time expected for everyone to act perfect, absolutely opposite of being a monster. Instead of his parents helping him get through a time of grief, they find him to be psychotic instead.
