Weight lifting is the act of lifting weights. One can do this for an activity, exercise, or even a sport. Weight lifting is used for a lot of training throughout all sports. It is typically the fastest way to get stronger and more fit.

Weightlifting has a lot of different implications. It can be used strictly for getting in shape, they have competitions for lifting or Olympic lifting. It can be used for so many things and that is one of the reasons why weight lifting is so great!

Why weight lift?

Weightlifting is associated with so many different things. It can be used for Olympic lifting, powerlifting, basic training, training for a Mr. Olympia show, or just to stay in shape.

The majority of people are using weights to lose weight, get in shape, and stay in shape. Some people use it to power lift, which I will go over later on. Lastly, some use it to do Olympic lifting.

No matter why people are lifting, their bodies are getting stronger when they participate in this activity. Obviously, if you lift with a plan you will get more fit faster, but even if you are just messing around you will get stronger.

Olympic lifting is a different style than basic lifting and powerlifting. Olympic lifters typically don't do that many traditional lifts. They typically don't bench, squat, or deadlift, but they incorporate those movements to do their lifts.

Some of their main lifts are power clean, clean and jerk, and snatch. A video of each will be attached so you can see what we are talking about here.

Olympic lifters compete just like powerlifters. They are trying to see who can do the most weight for these lifts. Typically, each lift will have a winner since each lift is unique. Another difference from powerlifting is Olympic lifting has weight classes, so for people who only weight 130 they are not competing with the people who weight 225. This just wouldn't be fair, but in powerlifting everyone is big, so it doesn't matter.

Olympic lifts use almost every muscle in the body. Here is a video of the Rio Olympic men's finals for clean and jerk. You will be able to see how hard these lifts are with the weight they are doing.

Powerlifting and Olympic lifting are quite extreme and not everyone should do them, but I do believe everyone who can lift should lift. It will keep you strong and fit. It is extremely easy to go push a bar a couple of times. Some people can take these exercises and use it almost as meditation. It is extremely easy to start. I highly recommend just trying it a few times.

Powerlifting is a sport within weight lifting. The athletes that compete in this are trying to lift the most they can in three different exercises. That excersise are bench press, back squat, and deadlift. They then add up their numbers to see who lifted the most weight. The person who lifts the most total weight will win the competition.

This is extremely hard because it is focusing on your whole body. Benching works your chest, shoulders, and arms. Back squat focus on your legs, but a lot of work is stabilizing the weight with your core. Lastly, a deadlift has a lot to do with your legs and glute.

Powerlifters have to train constantly if they want to win their competitions. Here is a video of a powerlifter going for the deadlift world record. This is being included, so you can see the final lift in the competition. (3:40-4:00)

Basic Training

When people say basic training, weight training, or lifting weights those all typically mean the same thing. They just mean using weights to train. This could mean benching, squatting, power cleans, using dumbbells, or even weighted machines.

There are so many ways you can use weights to train your body. The most common exercises you will see are the bench press and back squat. If you ever get into powerlifting or Olympic lifting there will be more complex lifts like a power clean, snatch, or deadlift, but let us keep it to the basics.

The basics are the bench press and back squat. The bench press is an exercise where you lay on your back, take a barbell (which is the bar that holds the weight) and lift it above your chest. When it is over your chest you will want to lower the bar to your chest. When it touches your chest you want to push it back up to the starting position. There is a video of a bench press at the bottom of this page. (5:00-5:10)

The back squat is a little hard then a bench press. To perform a back squat one must put the barbell against their shoulder blades. After they do that, they will want to put their hands on the bar near their shoulder. Then stand up, back up, and squat. They will want their legs to create a 90-degree angle. Once the legs make this, they will want to stand straight up. THat is a back squat. There is a video on the right of this page. (2:00-2:05)
