Text dependent questions require that students have actually read the text. However, the text should be complex and worthy of close reading. When you find that text, students can make connections with it, therefore they take it and go deeper with it-it means something to them. Then you can continue to come back to it and use it for different purposes.

You can use mentor text in any subject area. Using the mentor text allows you to ask basic recall questions, but more importantly you can create conceptual questions that require students to read the text closer in order to come up with more valuable and cognitive answers.

Mentor texts are a great thing for students to see during writing too. You are able to show them real writing and what it looks like in text. This is a good example of what they can do in their own writing. Close reading is digging deeper and teaching students to ask themselves questions while they are reading to themselves. Close reading will help the students to be more independent.

The "right" Mentor Text can be so powerful and engaging to the students but it has to be carefully looked at by the teacher and have a purpose. Close reading is really analyzing the text and focusing on significant details. It can help the students become more independent if they can transfer what they learned from close read to their text that they are reading.

The article gave good examples of both good and poor questions. The part about using shorter text to work on comprehension was powerful to me, especially as the students get into the higher level text and most books are chapter books.

Taking a closer look at close reading: Using the workshop framework during whole group reading, making sure you are asking text dependent questions. Also, are your questions requiring the students to use their higher order think and are they able to differentiate answers based on their personal experiences? These things will allow students to take ownership in the lesson. Get your students used to the questions you are asking so they are asking themselves those same questions during small group and eventually during independent reading time (could be a anchor chart). Questions can be taught explicitly through mentor texts over time.

Text-dependent questions can lead students to discover something they may have missed the first time they read a text. They can also promote deeper discussions and give students a better understanding of what was read. Using mentor texts to teach students about how to use/answer text-dependent questions is a great stepping stone for more complex text.

Close Reading lets the students explore deeper into their reading beyond the point of just reading for comprehension. It opens their mind up to explore open ended questions presented by the teacher and come up with questions of their own. (to think beyond the book) When presented to the students right way our students should progress and learn to think about things at a higher level.
