Streptococcus is the pathogen that causes the illness that we know as strep throat. Although there are several types of Streptococcus bacteria, two of them are the cause of most Streptococcal infections: group A and group B. Group A infections can lead to Scarlet fever, Impetigo, Toxic Shock Syndrome, and Cellulitis. Group B infections can cause meningitis, pneumonia, and blood infections. Symptoms of strep throat include a sore throat, red and swollen tonsils, pain when swallowing, and also fever. Treatment for Streptococcus includes antibiotics.
