As a 6th grade team, we exclusively create our own prompts. We spend a lot of time teaching how to break down the prompt using different strategies (do/what). We focus on organization and the elements of a "good" essay - creating a claim, topic sentences, citing evidence, etc. Using the My Editor tool has been helpful for revision as students can see specific feedback for their own writing. My Tutor has been helpful when making specific revisions for organization or development. We provide verbal feedback and the students enjoy seeing their scores go up with revisions - they are very competitive against themselves! It's tangible and IMMEDIATE.

BMS - Nicole, Kendal, Sarah - Although not all of us use the comments, as a team we have discussed that many of the students like to receive comments through MY Access! while they are working on a writing piece. Sometimes there is an option to highlight text and add a comment and other times you can only leave general comments. Often the students say that they cannot see the comments, even after they have been left several times.

We have mostly used MyAccess! as a tool for the revision process. We have used the editor tool and feedback reports. The students like the immediate feedback, which is helpful since we are unable to have individual conferences with every student at one time. The students like the individual feedback on their writing. They also like it when we allow for multiple revisions because they like to see how their writing grows and advances, which is a valuable teaching tool for revision

We have mostly put our own prompts into My Access. We have each tried one of the prompts already available in My Access, and we were able to use the sample essays to help students increase their scores by seeing what a 5 or a 6 response looks like/includes. We like My Access because we have found that students are motivated by the program and are competitive with each other.

We have used both our own prompts and prompts already in MyAccess! We've focused mostly on informative or argumentative pieces. Because some of our students are challenging to work with, it's difficult to get much out of them and into the program. At Choices, it tends to lead more into a discussion about the prompts rather than what they meant to put in the program. At WMS, I get a wide variety of response back from the students. Some will use MY Tutor to constantly fix their pieces and receive a higher score, while some may be satisfied with only having written five sentences.

Pittsville - Seems that teacher made prompts earn students higher scores than the included prompts. My Editor Tool is more beneficial than My Tutor because My Tutor info is too generic while My Editor is specific to their writing. Narrative submissions also seems to be scored higher. Wish there were links to prompts within the resource and training center that would take you directly to the passages.
