My Choice - Social Classes

There were four main social classes:
- The Nobles - The nobles lived on large estates outside the city walls. They owned most of the city’s land, so the nobles controlled. The nobles served as military officers, royal advisers and as politicians.
- The Merchants - The nobles were disdainful of the merchant class, who gained wealth in industries like wool processing, shipbuilding and banking. The merchants sought to protect their wealth by controlling the government and marrying into noble families. They became patrons of great artists in order to gain public favor.
- The Tradesmen -The tradesmen of Florence were the crafts workers and shopkeepers. Most tradesmen belonged to guilds, organizations that established standards of quality, set rules for membership, and limited outside competition.
- The Unskilled Workers - The unskilled workers were the lowest class of city workers. These laborers did not have job protection and were very dependent on their employers. Workers who violated rules could have their wages withheld or could be discharged from their jobs.

In Elizabethan Era England, the government was a monarchy. The monarch ruler, Elizabeth I had complete power over everything, unlike today. All laws were passed by Queen Elizabeth I, but she could not really pass laws by herself, all bills had to be approved by Parliament. She could, however, make royal proclamations to completely bypass having to go through Parliament. The British Monarchy also included the privy council. These were Queen Elizabeth's advisors, and could help make decisions regarding pretty much everything. The Queen could of course veto their advice. Parliament had much less power than they had now. They were mostly just used for financial matters but also passed some laws.

Wool and silk were important materials for womens clothing. Clothes were very expensive in this time period, so people did not have a lot of clothes, especially if they were poor. It was so expensive because silk was one of the main materials, and silk was expensive, it was traded on the silk road. As the ability to make clothes became easier and easier, clothes became more accessible for the middle class, but they were still pretty expensive. The types of clothes you had showed your wealth and status in society. People wore different types of clothing for church that were fancier than their normal clothes.
