Doyle's purpose is to instill a level of acceptance in order to inspire readers to live their lives with the knowledge that their time is limited. In addition, he resonate's with his audience's desire for security by toying with those feelings. He states, "not mother and father, not wife or husband, not lover, not child, not friend," referencing his previous statement about how one ultimately dies alone.

For example, his use of anaphora when stating  "You burn out. You fry the machine. You melt the engine" emphasizes the idea of time being finite, and the inevitable end to all functioning things/life-forms.  Additionally, his use of simile when stating "The valves are as big as the swinging doors in a saloon." emphasizes the vastness of these organisms and the seemingly impossible ability to comprehend how such a large organism is also facing an  impending death. On top of that, his use of polysendeton when stating " You can brick up your heart as stout and tight and hard and cold and impregnable as you possibly can and down it comes in an instant" emphasizes the inability to control the emotional aspect of the human heart's capabilities. No matter how many walls you put up, they can easily be broken down. By using asyndeton when stating " felled by a woman’s second glance, a child’s apple breath, the shatter of glass in the road, the words I have something to tell you, a cat with a broken spine dragging itself into the forest to die, the brush of your mother’s papery ancient hand in the thicket of your hair, the memory of your father’s voice early in the morning echoing from the kitchen where he is making pancakes for his children," Doyle is able to illustrate and evoke differing emotions that exist coherently, and further put emphasis on the extraordinary potential of the heart. Lastly, his use of epistrophe when stating "Mammals and birds have hearts with four chambers. Reptiles and turtles have hearts with three chambers. Fish have hearts with two chambers. Insects and mollusks have hearts with one chamber." emphasizes the idea that even though all living creatures are vastly different, it's in human nature to use what's provided in order to love. Because time on Earth is limited, the way one spend's their life is both the most important thing, and in the grand scheme of things virtually pointless.

His tone later shifts to be hopeless, as he expresses his feelings of disdain towards the inevitable end of life. We know this by the way Doyle describes the different creatures and how they symbolize different individuals and their personalities which range from soft spoken and loving like the hummingbird , to animals like the reptiles he describes that signify those who are more enclosed and have less space for love in their hearts.
