1. 1820's-1850's
2. New Englanders were seeing ships come in with spices and goods from China so they wanted to make a rich profit from trade. In 1834, the Methodists came to Oregon to start a new missionary. The Whitmans encouraged the Great Migration of 1843 (more than 1,000 people emigrated).
3. They're settling for more land and agricultural profit, New England was very densely populated so many came looking to build their own life with new land.
4. The Oregon Trail is the famous way that settlers came to Oregon. The Missionaries that came to Oregon only successfully converted a few Indians, so the mission changed to aid the white settlement of the country. Americans also killed many natives through disease. Throughout this migration, Oregon was not legally United States territory, so through the settlement of these peoples, it gave America more of a claim to the land, which would later be settled in treaties.
5. This group is important because it showed the great lengths people would go to for expansion, as the Oregon trail was not an easy trip. It also laid claim to the land that at that point was claimed by Russia, Great Britain, and the United States.
6. The only Americans in the area before the Oregon Trail were people like John McLoughlin who were there solely for the fur trade. Now, there were settlers who made their own way of life, similar to the settlements in New England but more agriculturally based. McLoughlin's way of life was one of a mountain man, while these settlers brought "civilization".

There was a lot of tension in the area, leading to political disputes.
-1837-The United States recognized Texas as an independent nation.
-Texas eventually began to serve as a representation of the future of America; the expansion of agriculture, alongside the rapid spread of slavery.
