1. We believe that for a majority of the essay, Cassandra's tone comes off as determined, while the beginning is more sad in order to show her change in attitude.

3) "In our house, there is no difference between cast and cash, which was why at a church retreat, people made fun of me for "cashing out demons."

2. Cassandra uses imagery to deepen the connection between the reader and her experience as a first generation immigrant.

3. Rather than directly stating the oppression she faced, she gave descriptive examples of her experiences, which portray her feelings. It then becomes more hopeful, optimistic, and forward-thinking towards the end. The repetition of the word 'enough' shows Cassandra's frustration, and the word 'humiliation' adds to the tone of isolation. The phrase "language is not broken but rather bursting with emotion" indicates the author's change of mindset. 
Cassandra also uses imagery throughout the narrative. One example that stood out was her mother's "sun-baked hands" which represented her mother's many experiences. The mention of Target in the sentence "My mother asked me to teach her proper English so old white ladies at Target wouldn't laugh at her pronunciation" made us think about how language is often put in a box and institutionalized, like Target. People expect it to be cut-and-dry, and catered to the general public. However, in reality language is much more flexible. The third example of imagery we found was in the description of sewing her mother's letters together. Her imagery helps convey the tone, as well as the shift in tone throughout the story. It also serves as an illustration of how words can be weaved together and open to interpretation.

Cassandra's tone is disheartened. She expresses this when describing the humiliation felt by her and her mother when the people around them, like classmates and even those they didn't know, laughed at the way they spoke or pronounced certain words. Her and her mother "were both crying now," and her mother asked her to help her so "old white ladies at Target wouldn't laugh at her pronunciation." Another phrase that expresses this is "people made fun of me for "cashing out demons.'"
2. She uses imagery to give the reader a deeper connection to her words, like describing her mother's hands as "sunbaked," it makes the experience she is writing about seem more vivid. Another example of this is "defenseless against the cruel words spewing from the teacher," which helps set the scene. Lastly, Cassandra describes this English as a house of words, calling it "a crooked house. It is a little messy," but still a home. 
3. She shows her story by describing these experiences and allowing the reader to imagine them, instead of just telling the reader they happened.

- "I did not realize the glaring difference between the two Englishes"
This shows determinations because it gives you an idea of her frustration of being unable to realize such a thing earlier

She used this declaration as a way to enhance the idea of how determined she was with her decisions.
