Rules hints many times throughout the story about what state this book takes place in, but in our opinion, the story takes place in the mindset of actual autism. Catherine's life revolves around David's autism and the rules he loves. She meets friends because of the disease he has, and benefits from it even though she doesn't know initially

Catherine is a summer-loving teenager, but the fact that her best friend, Melissa is moving out of state to go to her dad's, doesn't help that side of her. However, the lady next door, Mrs. Bowman, is moving out, and a new girl is moving in. Catherine gets very excited about this, but when she thinks of David, (Her little brother with autism), she realizes that it might all come crashing down on her.

Near the middle of the story, Catherine meets a new friend at David's OT clinic, a disabled boy named Jason. Jason pointed out that Catherine was drawing him to his mother, and when she told her to stop drawing her son, she obeyed quickly. Catherine gave him the drawing after he said he wanted it, and they quickly became the friends they are today. Around this point, Catherine meets her new neighbor, Kristie. She quickly realizes that they're completely different. This doesn't stop Catherine's determination for a summer friend, though. She tries to find interests they both enjoy, and is sometimes successful, and sometimes not, whilst she tries to carry the stress she has from David on her back.

Around the ending of the story, Catherine's summer life starts falling apart. Kristie and Catherine realize that they're on two opposite spectrum's, the fun loving side, and the serious one. Her and Jason start getting into fights, because of Catherine trying to protect him. They get in yet another fight over the fact that Jason thinks Catherine doesn't want to go to a dance run by Kristie because she'll be embarrassed. She figures out that it doesn't matter who the person is on the outside, but on the inside, and calls Jason's mom so she can ask him if he still wants to go with Catherine to the dance. He accepts, and Catherine introduces Jason to Kristie. Catherine's family starts healing back together after this life-lesson situation, because Catherine figures that just because David has autism, doesn't mean that he means what he does, and because
he does act like that, doesn't mean she needs to
treat him equally to the rest of the
people in her life.

As said above, the plot of the story is mainly faced around David's austism. Catherine's life isn't 'normal' compared to other peoples' lives, because of her brother and how he acts. She doesn't have many friends because she's afraid they'll be unatracted to her because of her brother. In the end, she sees how much her brother tries to act normal for her, and how much she's personally benefitted from him.
