As Napoleon invaded Spain, Spain's stranglehold of New Spain was weakening. Colonists started a revolution led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The reason for this was because many Mexicans wanted to separate from Spain and create a government that would act on behalf of their own beliefs.
