Born This Way by Lady Gaga is a song about identity, self-acceptance, and being proud of who you are. It is an excellent example of how music can reflect cultural values and social issues in contemporary American society. The song encourages people to embrace their differences and to feel confident in their uniqueness.

Its popularity shows how a cultural product like a pop song can have a social impact and influence the way people think about themselves and others.

One of the main cultural themes of the song is self-expression. Lady Gaga sings, “I’m beautiful in my way, ’cause God makes no mistakes”, which emphasizes that everyone has their own value and beauty. This idea reflects a cultural value in modern American society: freedom to express oneself and to live authentically. The song also promotes diversity, encouraging listeners to accept different sexual orientations, races, and gender identities. This theme is very important because it challenges a world where many people face discrimination or social pressure to conform.

The song also addresses societal norms. Many societies have fixed ideas about how people should look or act, especially regarding beauty, gender roles, and behavior. Born This Way challenges these norms by celebrating uniqueness and difference. Lyrics like, “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen” encourage people to reject social pressure and embrace their personal identity. Lady Gaga uses her music to show that social rules are not always fair and that society should be more accepting and inclusive.

In terms of implications for cultural identity, the song helps people feel proud of themselves and strengthens their sense of belonging. For individuals who feel marginalized, the song gives a message that they are seen and respected. It also shows that identity is not only personal but shaped by cultural and social contexts. When society values diversity and inclusion, individuals can express themselves freely, creating a stronger and more empathetic community.

Another important aspect of the song is empowerment. Lady Gaga encourages listeners to take pride in who they are and to resist negative comments or judgments from others. The lyrics, “No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgender life”, show that all people deserve respect and love. This teaches an important cultural lesson: society should support everyone’s right to live freely and confidently. The song promotes the idea that personal identity and self-worth are central to human happiness and well-being.

Born This Way also shows how cultural products, like songs, can influence society and create a sense of community. People who listen to the song often feel connected to others who share similar experiences or challenges. It highlights how music can be a medium for expressing cultural values, raising awareness of social issues, and shaping how individuals understand themselves and their place in society. Through its message of acceptance and pride, the song strengthens cultural identity by teaching that embracing differences makes society stronger and more compassionate.

In conclusion, Born This Way is more than a pop song; it is a cultural statement. It reflects important cultural values such as acceptance, equality, and individuality. It challenges societal norms and encourages people to celebrate their differences. The song demonstrates how music can influence cultural identity by giving people confidence, creating empathy, and promoting a more inclusive and open society.

By: Laura Daniela Sisa Pongutá.

Essay: Cultural Identity in Born This Way by Lady Gaga

Music is a strong way to show who we are and what we believe. I chose Born This Way by Lady Gaga because this song talks about self-acceptance and equality. It shows important values in American culture like freedom, diversity, and being proud of yourself. The song helps people feel strong and happy with who they are.

Born This Way was released in 2011 and soon became very famous around the world. Lady Gaga wanted to send a message of love and respect for everyone. She sings “I’m beautiful in my way, ’cause God makes no mistakes,” which means that every person has value and is perfect in their own way. In some interviews, she said that she supports equality and believes that everyone should be free to be themselves. She also talked about her feminist ideas and said she wanted to inspire people to love who they are (Powers, 2009; Strauss, 2010).

This song also talks about how society sometimes puts rules on how people should look or act. Lady Gaga says, “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen,” to tell people to be proud and not to hide who they are. This connects with what Riley (2007) explains about language and identity: he says that the way people use words shows their culture and beliefs. Gaga uses her words to create a positive message that helps people feel free and accepted.

One important thing about Born This Way is how it supports people who often feel different or rejected. Lady Gaga sings, “No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgender life,” and shows that everyone deserves love and respect. For many fans, these words are very special because they feel understood. As Sinha, Moreno-Núñez, and Tian (2020) say, identity is made through our relationships with others and the culture around us. Gaga’s song helps people build that connection and find pride in their identity.

Some people, like Cohen, also talked about how the song uses words that can make people think differently about identity. He mentioned that there can be some discomfort with labels like “orient-made,” because people don’t like to be divided by origin or identity (Garcia, 2011). Gaga’s lyrics help people go beyond labels, focusing instead on kindness and self-love.

The song is not only popular in the United States but all around the world. People from many countries listen to it and feel connected to the same message. This shows that the ideas of freedom and equality are not only American but universal. The song teaches that we are all part of the same human family, and being different is something to celebrate.

When I compared my analysis with my classmates’ reflections, we all agreed that Born This Way has a big social influence.

Some of them chose movies or stories that also talk about diversity and identity, but they noticed that Gaga’s song is special because of its emotional and direct message. It uses simple words that reach people of all ages. We discussed how art, especially music, can change people’s minds and make society more tolerant. One classmate said that the song helped many young people feel confident about themselves, and I completely agree with that idea.

From our group discussion, we also learned that cultural identity is not only something we are born with but something we build through our experiences. Society influences how we see ourselves, but we can also influence society when we express who we are without fear. This is exactly what Lady Gaga does with Born This Way. She uses her art to open conversations about respect, inclusion, and equality.

Reflecting on all the analyses, we concluded that Born This Way represents a new cultural moment where being different is not a problem but a source of strength. It shows that language and culture are always changing and that identity is flexible. People can redefine who they are as society becomes more open and diverse.

In conclusion, Born This Way by Lady Gaga is more than just a pop song. It is a message of hope and acceptance. It teaches that everyone is beautiful and important. It also shows that culture can change when people speak up for love, respect, and diversity. As Riley (2007) says, language and culture are part of who we are. Gaga uses her language, her art, and her music to make people feel stronger and more confident about their identity.

This song helps us understand that cultural identity is not about being perfect it is about being real, unique, and proud of who we are.

By: Laura Daniela Sisa Pongutá
