In third were the churls then manummitted slaves and celts. Then last were the slaves. The king was responsible for the military and all angle people. The Thanes has to attend legal assemblies and the churls has the same rights and obligations as the Thanes. 4. Huscarls were Scandinavian mercenaries who served in the Anglo-Saxon armies.
5. “Fyrd” was an old tradition of conscription in times of war.
6. When the Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain, local warlords hired warriors called “Hearthweru” for protection against Anglo forces.
