The seminar course will review, analyze, interpret, and apply specific topical research in special education. Students will learn various quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, including descriptive research, quasi-experimental design, single subject research methodology, and observation. Students will select a research topic, formulate a research question, develop a research proposal, analyze the literature, and propose appropriate research methodology to fill a gap in the research or contribute to the literature in the areas of special education. Students are also expected to integrate qualitative and quantitative knowledge to evaluate research reports, assessment techniques, and sample designs. Students are required to complete at least 15 hours of lab activities

V. Literature Review (70 points):

Summarize five to seven peer-reviewed sources that pertain to the problem that you will investigate. Each article you use must relate to special education/students with disabilities. For each resource, you must describe how the research is relevant to your study (including specific ideas you might be taking from that research and incorporating into your own research design). The literature review (including the introduction and conclusion) should be four (full) to five full pages long. Synthesize the material to the greatest extent possible, rather than simply restating information from each article in isolation. Use the following bolded words as headings

A. Introduction (10 points):
Define or identify the general topic, issue, or area of concern, thus providing an appropriate context for reviewing the literature. Establish the writer's reason for reviewing the literature

B. Review of Literature (30 points)

· Group research studies and other types of literature (reviews, theoretical articles, case studies, etc.) according to common denominators such as qualitative versus quantitative approaches, conclusions of authors, specific purpose or objective, chronology, etc.

· Summarize individual studies or articles with as much or as little detail as each merits according to its comparative importance in the literature, remembering that space (length) denotes significance.

· Provide the reader with strong "umbrella" sentences at beginnings of paragraphs, "signposts" throughout, and brief "so what" summary sentences at intermediate points in the review to aid in understanding comparisons and analyses.

C. Conclusion (10 points)

·Summarize major contributions of significant studies and articles to the body of knowledge under review, maintaining the focus established in the introduction.

·Conclude by providing some insight into the relationship between the central topic of the literature review and your research project.

VI. Research Questions (10 points)
Formulate two research questions.

VII. References (10 points)

Cite all articles from the literature review using APA 6th edition formatting in a reference page at the end of the literature review.

VIII. Methods and Procedures (80 points):

This section should be typed with the following subsection headings:

A. Participants and Settings (10 points): Describe the participants targeted for the study (e.g., sample size, demographics, sampling method, rationale for selecting certain participants for the study); this includes information regarding any comparison group if that is part of the study. Do not identify the site or any individuals by name. Use fictitious names.

B. Instruments (20 points): Describe the measures used to collect your data. Specify if each instrument was designed by the researcher or by another person/company. If it was researcher-designed, specifically describe the process by which it was developed (it is highly recommended to include validity and reliability). Copies of the actual instrument(s) must be included in the appendix.

C. Treatment/Intervention (25 points): The independent variable (the intervention) needs to be described in detail. Include information about

a) What is the intervention?

b) Who will implement the intervention?

c) How will it be taught to the students?

d) Over what time period will the intervention be delivered.

IX. Data Analysis Procedures (25 points) Describe the plan for analyzing data including research design (e.g., pre- and post-test comparison, single-case research design), method of analysis. You may use pre- and post- test scores if you will be utilizing a standardized assessment tool for determining student progress. For this project, most other forms of data collection should include at least four instances of data collection to determine the baseline and at least four instances of data collection following the introduction of the intervention
