So-called 'History Painting' becomes popular among wealthy Europeans. 'History Painting' is a style of painting which depicts moments of historical, literary, or religious excellence. This posed a challenge for artists as they not only needed to paint intricate facial expressions, poses, and scenes, they also needed to do it based on word, whether it be from a religious Scripture, a historical text, or eyewitness stories. To quote the passage, "The central challenge of history painting lay in selecting a particular subject that could engage the heart and instruct the mind". This shows that artists also had to try and use these already difficult techniques to create a painting that conveyed emotion and meaning, not only just how it was told to them.
However difficult it may have been, 'History Paintings' challenged artists to change the way they painted, and made them able to gain a new, if not revolutionary, approach to painting. This also prompted artists in later years to create paintings such as "Washington Crossing the Delaware" (1851) and "The Death of Major Peirson" (1781).

Gender-specific arts are widely categorized, women do some styles of art while men do others. This leads to a greater variety between the two styles of art and expertise. For example, women usually made pottery, and tended to paint more abstractly, so pottery tended to be abstract. This was also evident when men and women would do the same arts, like skin painting. According to the passage, "Male painting was representational, autobiographical, and mostly related to war honors; whereas female painting was abstract and symbolic" (Gale.com). Additionally, this prompted the beginnings of professionalism in art, where artists would be paid to make art for others.

17th century artists rarely had enough time nor finance to be able to develop their styles, meaning they had to resort to the traditional European styles. Eventually however, they decided to mix tradition with their own styles, as well as those of their clients. according to the article, "Even in the 18th cent. it was seldom possible to earn a living by working at painting alone" (infoplease.com). this fact prompted many artists to turn their work towards commercial uses, and lean towards craft as opposed to art.
