Okay perhaps not everything is a text, but quite a few things are. And for every type of text, there is a literacy. For me, the key takeaway is not to limit what we consider worth reading. This is particularly relevant in pedagogy, which is why teachers should utilize their students' many valuable literacies! Almost everything being a text is also something I will most certainly bring up in casual conversations from time to time! :D -Anton

Multiliteracies allow us to gain new insights, new understandings. Language never quite captures reality, or emotions, or thoughts. There is always a border between words and the world. By being experimental with modes of expression we may find new ways of communication and creating meaning.

I'll admit that despite my lingering confusion, this course has improved, or rather expanded, my understanding of multiliteracy. I think that I really got into the multiliteracies (including basically everything carrying the meaning of a text) during this course. This picture does not have any text, but I still think that you have to have multiple literacies in order to decipher who lives here, how old they are, is the room messy or does the owner just have a different kind of idea of 'everything having their own place'. Maybe the blue basket is in its correct spot, since it is used as a place to put in the next day's clothes beforehand instead of it being part of the mess 🤷🏼.

I was recently informed that I have texts under my skin and that I should get them out. In all seriousness though, it has been interesting to go about my day and think about all the skills and understandings I have of the world, and having to deal with the myriad of literacies I lack. Knowing that everything I understand is a part of my literacy keeps me (in)sane.

I chose this photo of colorful yarn to represent my understanding of multiliteracies. The knitting metaphor from class 2 stuck with me and though it wasn't representing multiliteracies in that context, I think it is fitting for the term. The different colors represent all the different text types that multiliteracies encompass, and the yarn makes me think of the way our understanding of different texts connects us to them and the world, helping us navigate our environment. Also, once we understand them, we can create new texts or new meanings with them – and if we're still running with the metaphor, it fits really nicely with knitting something from the yarn. :) -Linnea

As the course went on, it was funny to always gain a new "this could also be a text" point of view with each class and thus this idea is also represented in my meme. I do believe that a lot of different things can be texts, in the sense that if you have a literacy in that particular "text" you can "read" it and gain insight from it. For example, you can read a building and figure out perhaps when it was build and what it is used for, or you could read a car and figure out if it's a newer or an older car, more expensive or affordable, what kind of person could own it based on how it is decorated or if it has a child safety seat or wunderbaums in it for example. Some people even express themselves through elaborate makeup looks and that means you can read makeup as a text if you have that literacy. I feel like understanding the concept of multiliteracies opens up one's world quite a bit and helps people express themselves and understand each other better.

A bit of a dramatization of reality, but multiliteracies are a much broader topic than it initially seems. Realising that multiliteracies are about understanding and using everything literacies and communication has to offer at first seems daunting, but it also opens the door for the amazing potential it has. For a linguist, this is a veritable superweapon.

I think this picture illustrates my understanding of multiliteracy better than my words. After this course I do think that many things (e.g. Buildings) can be texts and that texts are everywhere. These ”lenses” have immense power in shaping the way we create meaning and read the the texts all around us. To me, multiliteracies express meaning in various ways. Words, pictures, fonts, colors, moving image and so on. In poetry, meaning is often left to reader's interpretation. Also, the different cohesive tools make poetry so special.

I created this meme because the course has made me pay more attention to my environment and the stories that are embedded in it. On a more serious note, it has been really interesting and important to be reminded of all the ways many decisions - whether related to space design, website elements, language choices, etc. - are often not very inclusive.

This course has really broadened my view of what texts can be, how many different ways there are to read and interpret them, and what kinds of literacies are needed to be able to manage different kinds of situations. My main takeaway from this course is that there are numerous ways to build, read, and interpret this world, but no one way is more correct than others.

For me, the course is a gift that I warmly welcome. I've improved my awareness a lot! My environment speaks to me every day: the books in the library, the buildings around me, the artworks in the museums... We are connected to everything! Communication takes part on a higher level. That's why I chose the Buddha picture. In Buddhism, you feel connected to your environment. Be aware!
