Before the class started, I always worried that I wouldn't understand what the teacher was saying. But now I'm always worried that the teacher won't understand me. I'm really worried about whether I can meet the teacher's expectations.

Ms. Nicky's designs are so beautiful, I kind of want one like those. Those sea creatures are so common to me that I don't really care, but global warming is so bad for these little creatures. It's so pithy to see them go from being colorful to gray. Perhaps we should pay more attention to the damage that warming is doing to the oceans.

 

And gum spots are popping up in our towns, cities, streets, parks, schools, movie theaters, trains, planes and theme parks. The spots don't just damage the environment. Across the UK, councils spend around £60 million a year removing gum litter from their streets. In Oxford Street alone, 2.5 million pieces of gum were discarded. 9 out of 10 of the paving stones had gum on them. However, chewing gum can take up to five years to biodegrade.

Designers will ultimately determine how much carbon emissions will be in the design process of size, shape, color, printing style and paper. By making reasonable decisions, designers can reduce the impact of their designs on the environment, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and using natural resources more effectively.

 

Research by Ross Bernet (2021) shows that over a year, a mature tree absorbs approximately 22 kilograms [or 48 pounds] of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen in exchange. The trees remove between 4.5 and 40.7 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare per year during their first 20 years of growth.

 

The life cycle of paper, however, begins before it is cut down for pulp -- once the trees are cut down, they become debris, then transported, pulped, bleached and finally made into paper. Even, valuable resources are used at every stage of paper making and pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and greenhouse gases are released into the environment.

 

With the shift from paper to electronic document management and cloud computing, paper remains an integral part of our work. But there are ways to reduce a designer's carbon footprint. First, to make it chlorine-free, designers can use completely chlorine-free bleached (TCF) or process chlorine-free bleached (PCF) paper. Second, look for certified institutions to provide environmentally friendly sources of paper. Finally, choose the paper with the highest percentage of recyclable ingredients.

I came across an interesting analysis in my data collection today. At first, there were various types of chewing candy in China, ranging from bubble-blowing children's candies to xylitol, tooth care and so on. Some focus on fresh breath; Some are sweet and long-lasting. But all this gum is gone in China. Why?

 

First, it's a product that relies heavily on impulse purchases. The main place for the sale of chewing gum, a cheap snack, is the counter space. Chewing gum is a good small commodity for consumers to break large denomination currencies when they settle accounts. Humans have almost no hard demands to chewing gum. It is advertising that creates an endless stream of soft demands, such as dental care or breath freshening.

 

However, mobile payments have penetrated every corner of the city in China, where the time to pay, the amount of time people spend at the counter, has been compressed almost indefinitely, with chewing gum sales almost all crammed into the tiny space of a cash register. People also spend much less time making impulse purchases while passing the checkout counter.

 

What’s more, the popularity of mobile payment fundamentally solves the problem of large banknotes and small change. Chewing gum, a cheap snack, also loses another incentive for impulse buying. Now, brands that once fought it out in the chewing gum category are moving to other tracks.

 

Finally, China enacted a law on chewing sugar in 2020 (effective March 1, 2021). People can be fined up to 25 yuan (around £3 or less) for uncivilized behaviors such as spitting or chewing gum.

 

In the afternoon, I spent a special visit to the supermarkets near my home. I could hardly find any chewing gum. In store, there are almost one or two kinds of gum, and in most stores there are almost none. Instead, there are mint-flavored candies, or brand-new products like oral pop. Anyway, I think it's a good change, isn’t it?
