Social- Women's Roles

A new type of style for women has been created. Felt hats, short and bright dresses, sleek pumps, and short jet black hair are just a few characteristics to describe what I'm talking about- the Flapper, (image above). Young women are in a phase to become "rebellious" and equal. The flapper is the perfect way to embody rebellious behavior and allows women to become more assertive. Some women are drinking, others are smoking. One thing is for sure though: the Flapper can tell us that women are changing their feelings, and they want equality. The flapper however is not giving the women all the equality they want. Women are still limited and not equal and are living on a double standard where they have less sexual freedom than men. They are also limited in their job/at the workplace. They are often replaced with men after the war, and still get paid less than men. "Women's jobs" are often seen as librarians, teachers, or nurses, and create stereotypes for women in the workplace. Now, women are changing/breaking the stereotype by becoming pilots and drilling oil wells.

Cultural- Prohibition

Prohibition is leading to many push and pull factors today. Some factors are peacefully helping voice opinions, and others include crime and dangerous activity. One cause of Prohibition is speakeasies-illegal and secret drinking in underground saloons which has an effect of a lot of illegal activity today, (image to the left). A similar case is the bootlegger- someone who smuggles alcohol in from other countries. This has the same effect as speakeasies, since it promotes illegal/bad behavior and disloyalty to the law, ironically, something prohibition is "supposed" to decrease. Lastly, prohibition is causing organized crime- large/famous people who break the law to obtain/manufacture alcohol. One current example is Al Capone, a flashy part of the folklore now. Al Capone killed many people in order to get his illegal business where it is now. In general, not many people respect prohibition, and for the people who don't, that just means there is more organized crime and illegal/disloyal activities going on.

Economic- The Automobile

Another booming industry is the automobile. First, the automobile is completely changing the American life; paved roads are being built, garages/additions to houses for automobiles are being made, and an even more efficient and affordable mode of transportation is being created. One famous paved road- route 66- gives trekkers a direct path west from Chicago to California. Houses with new additions like the garage and being built onto these houses. The spread of paved roads and automobiles is great business for the gas stations, shopping centers, auto-repair shops, motels, and tourist camps. New business developments like the underwater tunnel and stop lights are being made. However, so many cars in the US (80% of the world'd cars to be exact), is not so good for the railroad industry since not many people will need it to get around anymore.

Economic- The Airplane Industry

Many new economic opportunities/booms are beginning to present themselves. One booming industry in the US right now is the Airplane. Advancements/business developments made for the airplane include airplane radios, and navigational instruments. People continue to prove the safety and growing technology of airplanes- like Amelia Earhart promoting airplanes for cargo purposes and Pan American Airways providing the first passenger flights. The airplane is also creating more jobs for women as a flight attendant, (image to the right). However, the booming creation of technologies and uses of the airplane mean bad news for the railroad industry, much like the automobile does, because people can now use airplanes to travel far distances, even across the oceans.

Credit is also a big player in the American booming economy today. Credit allows people to pay for the ever growing and expensive technologies through installments over a set period of time. This idea of credit is pushed by the new ideas of advertising. Psychologists are being hired to create slogans that appeal to Americans to lure them in. Credit is also helpful for the expanding electrical conveniences which are very expensive. Average consumers can buy electrical conveniences such as the refrigerator for as little as a dollar down and a dollar a week! However, credit and installment plans are creating grounds for a superficial prosperity. People are becoming more and more in debt when they cannot pay weekly or monthly installments on expensive electrical conveniences. Installments can quickly add up, and who knows what this can leave in store next for businesses who offer installment plans...

Farmers are greatly suffering now, as demand for crops during the war increased. This caused farmers to buy more land and other machines to meet the production needs during the war. Now, many farmers are going into debt for not being able to fully pay off land and machines. This causes farmers to lose purchasing power, not being able to pay mortgage, and loss of equipment. All and all, this results in many farmers loosing their farm/land, which mean lots of debt and hard, jobless times for farmers.

Political- Harding Presidency

The new tax policy which raised tariffs by nearly 60% makes it near impossible for Great Britain and France to pay back the $10 million in goods that they owe the US since the 60% raise is so much more expensive. In an attempt to help solve this problem, the US implemented the Dawes plan: We gave $2.5 billion to Germany to pay reparations to Great Britain and France so they could give it to the US. Essentially, the US is getting paid with their own money! How much sense does that make? On top of this, president Harding's close friends and cabinet members are destroying his administration by using their positions to gain money for themselves, (graft). The US Navy Secretary, Albert B. Fall, illegally leased the Teapot Dome Naval Oil Reserve to two private oil companies in the Teapot Dome Scandal. He has been found guilty of this after receiving $400,000 in "loans, bonds, and cash". How upsetting is it that the President's own friends and specially selected cabinet members are turning his administration to mush?
