United States chose Hiroshima because it had a fairly large population, and was home to military equipment and industrial efforts, making it important to Japan.

The bombing not only showed Japan how outclassed they were in the war, it also showed the other countries who fought against the U.S. that they should fear the destructive power of the United States and how deadly the war could be. It made war into a battle of bomb size rather than a battle of arms which would make World War III, if it ever happens, far more cataclysmic than any war before it.
